Hello,

A bit of backgroud-my daughter is now 10months old, diagnosed with an unbalanced AVSD and coarc of the aorta (is noted in signature below). She's completed 2 of 3 surgeries and is finally doing fairly well now-developed osteomylitis after 2nd surgery and spent 2 months in hospital. She was pretty much 100% NG tube fed. She had eaten some cereal and veggies(baby food) prior to second surgery at 6 months-but refused afterwards. However, in the last few weeks, I've discovered that she's chosen to skip baby food and has moved right on to adult food. I've been trying to find foods she'll like so that we're replicating meals in the day. Her favorites are Kraft Dinner, cheese slices and bananas. She eats these most days. Also bits of avocado, ham slices, canned peaches and a few other things.

I've read that blood in stool can be indicative of an allergic reaction to food, but my daughter actually started to have blood in her stool just prior to my feeding her Kraft Dinner, etc. However, the blood has been ongoing for several weeks now. I've been asked if it is mucousy or not, and if that means compared to it soaking into the diaper, then I would have to say it's a bit mucousy-not one huge lump either, just small streaky amounts here and there. It's not vibrant red, but it is not cranberry colored in consistency (she also suffered a few rounds of intussusception while at the hospital). Otherwise she is perfectly happy and content, and in fact is continuing along in other developmental areas, babbling and potentially going to crawl soon. Blood tests were run and stool samples tested but nothing has come back different. To note also, she is on 40mg of aspirin daily (she's approx 19lbs) and the last time this happened (but only once or twice, not for several weeks) at about 4 months of age, they had me stop her aspirin for several days. This time they've said not to.

What would be your opinion about why she had blood in her stool? Should I be concerned? Thanks for your help, I hope I wasn't too long-winded, just wanted to make sure you have all the necessary info.

Thanks,

Dr. Olson

Hi,

Lots of possibilities exist for the cause of the blood in her stool. If she doesn't appear sick, then a trial of stopping the ASA again might be warranted, if this is approved by her cardiologist. Food allergies can cause blood in the stool, but this will be difficult to prove.

Sorry I can't be of more help to you. Fortunately it sounds like she is doing quite well at the moment. Dr. Olson
