Hi Dr

My 3 1/2yr old was diagnosed with a severe EI (high fever) last Saturday
He was put on 3/4 tsp of omnicef for 10days (today is day 10)
He has a history of recurrent SI's
He was doing well initially, but the past few days has become more and more congested, red/puffy eyes, crusty nose, sleeping alot, etc
Could his EI turn into an SI, even while on omnicef?
Omnicef is usually what he is given to treat an SI...

Hi,

Generally the same pathogens that cause middle ear infections cause sinus infections, so it is likely that the Omnicef would treat both, if they both actually are there. Often situations like this are complicated by the underlying viral illness that usually precedes both ear and sinus infections. How much of the illness is caused by the ear and how much by the essentially untreatable viral illness is debateable.
