WyattsMom 02-04-2007, 04:37 PM As my username would suggest I am a new mom to Wyatt. 2 days before Christmas and 11 days after his birth all %$^& broke lose at my house. What I thought was a bad reaction to my breastmilk (which in a way was true) turned out to be silent reflux. Fortunately he was diagnosed 4 days later and was put on Axid for a couple of days, then on Prevacid after Axid did absolutely nothing for him. After weeks on Prevacid and little improvement he was put on Zantac. We saw some improvement but it was obvious he was metabolizing the Prevacid too quickly. By week 4 of the suffering he was put on 7.5 mg twice a day and .5ml of Zantac twice a day and switched to Enfamil Gentlease as the breastmilk was causing him to reflux far worse than formula. After another couple of days of crying the bottles, but far less crying during the day (which was constant all day long for 3 weeks straight) I took matters in my own hands and started down the formula thickening maze. After much reading many posts from Noah's Mom on these message boards I figured it out in roughly 24 hours. Result...I have a new child. He naps, he plays, and is beginning to self soothe. I think I might have caught the disease soon enough to prevent major damage to his esophagus with the help of his pediatrician and a GI specialist at the University of Kentucky.
I am so glad to be here and thought I would join in case I could offer some help to other new moms. These boards have already changed my life and the life of my child, maybe I can be a part of the solution.
Francesca 02-05-2007, 08:58 AM Hi and welcome!

steveangela1 02-05-2007, 11:24 AM welcome to ird. sounds like you know what you are doing for your little one. I live in northeast tn, Carsons gi doc used to be affilated with uk, and says they have a great gi team there. I considered taking him to uk, until I found his speicalist he has now. In fact he is the acting cheif of childrens gastro at uk right now. (Dr. Al-Tawil) I have to say that man changed my babies life so profoundly. My little man was close to geting a fundo and possibly a feeding tube because of his reflux being so poorly managed by his old gi doc, after firing the old gi doc the day of carsons bronch and surgery consult at the hosptial I called Dr Al-tawil and wow.... He put carson on prevacid and elecare and in a week I had a different baby. We then later added an h2 blocker (axid) and I have a "normal" happy toddler now.
If the UK gi's have a touch of DR. Al-Tawil's knowledge you will be in great hands!!! I could kiss that man!
OH, I love the name wyatt... that is my4 year olds name...
manda40475 02-05-2007, 08:56 PM Welcome to the IRD boards! Wow! I believe you are the closest GERDling mom I've seen here on the boards! I am in Richmond, although I lived in Lexington for nine years and am originally from Western, KY. Who is Wyatt's pediatrician?
Debbie 02-05-2007, 09:22 PM Hi,
Welcome to IRD, glad you found us! Have a look around, and if you have questions don’t hesitate to ask them. We want to help support you and your little one thru this trying time. There is a ton of info here, along with the support of many parents who have children suffering from reflux on many different levels.
WyattsMom 02-06-2007, 01:35 AM For my fellow Kentuckians...my pediatrician is Dr. Jeremy Warner on Tates Creek Rd. in Lexington and he is working with Dr. Brannon Alberty at the University of Kentucky on Wyatt's case.
If you are in the Central KY area and are just lurking on the boards like I diid for a few weeks, go ahead and register. Let's all work together to raise awareness here in the Bluegrass and maybe get a play group going.
I know from talking to a Walgreens pharmacist that just moved to Lexington from Louisville that there are lots of kiddos in Louisville on both Prevacid and Zantac but the pharm. mgr. at the same store said they rarely fill Zantac scripts much less Prevacid & Zantac for the same kid at his Lexington store. Maybe it's just the location of my Walgreens (surrounded by homes with less young families and far more elderly folks). So if there are lots of kids in Louisville on both meds, we need folks to register here and then we can really make some progress. So if you are a GERDling mom or dad in KY, I would especially love to hear from you.
By the way, I have personally spoken with 2 different compounding phramacists, one in Lexingtin and one in Berea, about getting Prilosec compounded for Wyatt if the Prevacid isn't working as it should. Both have a few infant patients that they compound for every month. Contact me if you need that info.
