hi there.

Naomi has just been switched to Movicol from the GI when she used to be on lactulose (duphilac). He wants her to take 2 sachets the first day and one every day thereafter. The prob is that it says to mix each sachet with 125ml water and drink. Well there is NO WAY she is going to drink that much, so what do you think I should do. I just gave it to her mixed with 10ml and siringed it in (she hated it) but will it work if it isn't with the larger amount of water? If not, what can you suggest I do?

Hi, this product is polyethylene glycol 3350 which is being used more often by pediatricians for chronic constipation although it's recommendation tries to suggest using it for 2 wks only at a time. As far as I can figure, the volume of reconstitution is important in order for the solution to draw the water into the lumen of the bowel without causing too much discomfort. I would suggest giving it with the full 125 ml total. The only trick to making it drinkable is to serve it chilled. Do not add flavourings. I know it sounds mean but sometimes there are meds that just don't taste that great and need to be taken. You may seem like the big bad ogre to a child in this case by making them take it but as the doctor once told me, "when I was young, you had to take it to get better, and that was that."
Hope this helps, Graham Ph.C.
