I'm trying to intoduce sippy cups at meal times but the boys are having a really hard time figuring out how to make them work. They try to bite them and that does nothing to get the water out. They get pretty frustrated and so do I. I've probally bought about 15 diffrent types of cups and dh is getting really ticked everytime I come home with a new one, but I'm trying to find one they can use. Which cup did you find the easiest to drink out of? Soft spout or hard no drip or not? Its sooooooo confusing?

Did you remove the valve in the cups? Most GERDlings have trouble with valves. I used hard tipped but that worked for my two older boys, but not really for Iain. I became the Imelda Marcos of sippy cups and got very limited success with any of them where Iain was concerned. Our OT told us to go straight to open cup and it was by far the best for him.

I tried taking the valve out but they seem to drowned. Too much water at one time. I tried just letting them drink from the open cup but they kept grabing and hitting my hand and spilling water everywhere.

It takes time to get the hang of the open cup. It is much more work initially, but better in the long run when they cotton on. Perhaps a mini sports bottle of sorts might work? We had some great ones for our older boys that they had to draw on but did not use a valve for. They were great.

Nuby makes a sippy cup that I have used with both of my boys. Carson couldn't catch on to the other sippy cups. The nuby sippy cups have a rubber top and its almost like a nipple but its a sippy cup...
they are about 1.50 a peice at walmart.. really cheap... thats all I use now.
we are trying to use a sippy for miki at the moment and we have also bought loads of them she is happy to play with them but cant get the hang of it either we tii took the valve out and it went to fast and chocked her so we are just filling it up and letting her play with it she seems to get a tiny bit out

It has/is taking some time for my boys to get the hang of sippy cups and I have 4 different kinds (x's 2 of course) in my cupboards. They do just play w/them alot but that's okay. I read that if they even hold it you should praise them which we did and we made a big deal when they would get the spout in their mouths. So that helped. Keegan is better w/his than Dylan, w/teething though they are definitely more interested in chewing on the spouts right now.
We use the Nuby ones, and the straw cup, Dylan seems to do better w/the straw. I think the other ones I started using recently are made by Playtex, they have a hard spout and are for 12+m, but the valve is interchangeable so you can make it so more/less fluid comes out. They seem to be doing well with those, Keegan drank between 3-4 oz. of water on Saturday and Sunday from his cup, Dylan not so much, only an oz. but we'll get there.

We are just starting the sippy cup and I have about 6 different kinds. So far Herny likes the Gerber ones with the handles the best. The valve is different than some of the others and it seems easier for his to get the water out. I have tried all of his sippy cups and I can't believe how hard you have to suck to get anything out. :sad3:

Have you tried a straw cup? Our little one didn't like sippy cups at first, but loved drinking out of a straw.

I too have tried many sippy cups for my daughter. When I was first showing her how to use them, I let her mouth it with the suction in. Eventually I moved to taking the suction out and tipping a bit of water into her mouth(she hates her bottle and formula). She eventually started to open her mouth for it. Then I put the suction back in and eventually started doing it on her own. I did find that she often wouldn't tip the cup far enough, so I often held it for her. Had previously tried the straw cup, but she didn't know what to do with it(straw was soft-not sure if they're all like this). So, moving on, a month or so later. Found some of those disposable straw cups at Walmart while buying bowls and got some. At first she didn't know what to do, but caught on within minutes when she saw me using one-only problem is it can come out easily. So now, just gave her the old, real, straw sippy cup and she knows exactly what to do, and doesn't have an issue with not tipping it far enough!!! Hooray!!!!
