janelle1983 01-25-2007, 12:53 PM They increased the Zantac to 2ml twice a day over the weekend bc the 1.4 did nothing and he just got worse and worse(I had the week from HELLLL). So he said if the 2ml didn't do anything to come back in a few days, so sure enough, nothing changed and I went back today. With the newest symptoms hes been having and the fact that hes been worse, he prescribed Prevacid. We start it tommorrow and he says hes sure this will work, so I'm basically praying at this point...
He gave me the name of a GI Specialist and since it will take about 4 weeks that will be the perfect time to go see the GI doctor since he'll have been on the new drug for a while. What do you know about the Prevacid, does it have a good track record or maybe even any bad side effects? Heres the thing, do you really notice a difference when they are feeling better? Like is it like "WOW THIS DRUG IS WORKING" or is it more like "maybe this is working" lol....I feel like I'm not sure what to be looking for....
My husband doesn't understand much about this, now granted I'm not an expert or anything, but he was yelling on the phone when I told him the doctor said "this should work for him". He's not open minded to meds at all so this has been hard on me trying to explain all of this to him, God help me lol!! I can handle my husband, I just pray that this works and gives both my son and I a break :) The last 4 months have been so difficult and I just want my son to go more than 20 min without screaming...
Thanks to everyone and their help, this group has been the best support especially since I have none at home!!
Katey 01-25-2007, 01:04 PM Prevacid has worked really well for Sebastian. I kept him on the Zantac for the first two weeks, since it can take a little while for the Prevacid to kick in. You just have to make sure you space the meds. I had heard two hours or four hours apart, so I went with four just to be safe.
My husband did not like the idea of meds either. And then as soon as things started going well he said we should stop giving him the medicine. I think he would feel differently if he were the one that was up all night will him and home listing to the screaming. He now just tells me to do what I think is best, because he knows I have done a ton or research.
I hope the Prevacid will work for him. A lot of babies have done really well on it. There are some that it did not work for. I think the main side effect is tummy pains. Sometimes it will just be for the first few days, and other times it is so bad that kids can’t take it.
steveangela1 01-25-2007, 01:05 PM The prevacid is good for some kids. I think its diff meds react diff with each kid. We were not able to keep carson on 15 mg of prevacid, he kept having tummy aches. So now he is on axid and prevacid but only half strenth prevacid. The medicine can cause abd. pain.
It is a really good medicine.
Your dh is like mine. My dh is a paramedic, but anti medicine anti seeing docs and anti invasive procedures.
I am the kind of person that if it helps take it.
He fliped his lid with carson this past year and a half all the diff meds they have put him on and procedures they have done. I have been on stomach meds since I was 7 so its nothing new to me.
I hope the prevacid works!! GOOD LUCK
janelle1983 01-25-2007, 01:12 PM I think we have the same husband lol!! He says the same kind of things too, even today he asked,"are you sure its reflux"?? Mind you, I'm the one all day and night dealing with this and he'll say things like "MAYBE THE FEET PJ'S ARE BOTHERING HIM, I KNOW I HATED THEM WHEN I WAS LITTLE"....OR MY FAVORITE ONE, "WHATS WRONG WITH HIM, MAYBE THIS OR THAT"....Mind you, he holds him 5 min(which I had to fight tooth and nail to get him to do) and "JANELLE, JANELEEEE, HE'S SQUIRMING A LOT WHY IS HE DOING THAT"?? Gee, maybe bc hes a baby, duh!!!
Anyway, I've decided the less I tell him the better, the baby has been made MY job only, so I'll just say we're seeing the doctor, it went well from now on lol. God willing things get better soon.
Katherines Mom 01-25-2007, 07:18 PM When Katherine was about 3.5 months, she started getting really colicky even though she never really had been before. At that point, she was switched from Zantac to prilosec (also a PPI). I think we started seeing a slight difference after a few days, but after a few weeks she was a new baby. I don't think there was a single day when we went "wow" it happened pretty gradually, but it is a wow thing. We have since switched to prevacid, and she does even better with that than she had with the prilosec.
I hope it works as well for you.
Minnie 01-26-2007, 08:38 AM For us it was "WOW! This drug is working!"
with zantac and zegerid. (the zantac slowly faded away)
Maalox No WOWs, but it helped some
Mylanta Nothing
Pepcid WOW! This drug works!! followed by OMG!!!! it's done working already and it's not time to give more!!!!
Prilosec OMG! I think it's poisoned or something!!!
LMAO!
This probably didn't help you at all. I'm so sorry....
It's so hard finding that right med, and everyone is so different.
For what it's worth I really hope that the prevacid makes a huge difference, I hope you can say WOW!!!!
(((BIG HUG)))
scarlet 01-28-2007, 08:05 AM Hi there sorry I am so late on this one, but as the other girls has said it is well tolerated and is very wildly used. I would suggest that you stay on the zantac at least two weeks until you see an improvement in the symptoms and then wean from that, otherwise on the changeover what happens is that he will be essentially unmedicated as the zantac gets out of his system but takes the two weeks for the other to get working, does that make sense? Sorry I am a bit tierd LOL
Side effects are generally rare, but will be similar to headaches, constipation, diareha but hopefully he will have none of them. Good luck!
