Hi--

My son currently gets 2.6ml of Axid two times a day and Carafate 2-3 times per day. Couple of questions:

- I normally give his Axid right before a bottle--does this decrease the effectiveness? Would it work better 1/2 hour before or just about the same?

- I also give Carafate directly before a bottle (not at the same time as the Axid)--is this effective for the Carafate?

- Does having the Simethicone gas drops in a bottle decrease the effectiveness of the Axid?

- Is it okay to give Mylanta 1.5 hours after an Axid dose or is this too close?

Thanks so much!

Heather

Hi, axid is given with or without food (do not give with apple juice). Carafate should always be given on an empty stomach an hour before meals or bedtime. There is a theory that antacids might reduce the absorption of the axid slightly so separation by a couple of hours is sometimes recommended but the 1.5 hours is enough to avoid that. I'm not aware of any interactions of a drug-drug nature with simethicone. Separate carafate and antacids a couple of hours.
