My daughter will be 6 mos. old next week. She was very craby the first 3 mos. of her life and has vomited since 1month old. (Before one month she spit up a lot but gained weight very well) around 1 month she started to vomit & was very uncomfortable all the time.... After bottle feedings she would vomit a lot seemed like her body was rejecting food. She is currently on an NG tube b/c she was vomitting to much and could not gain weight. She is currently on Prevacid in the morning (solutabs 1/2 pill) and reglan every 6 hours....

She currently weighs 13lbs. She was 8.5 when she was born and was 10lbs. 10 ounces at 1 month..... My questions are:

- How long do docs recommend NG Tube feedings for she is going on 3 Mos.
- Is it possible that she has something else other than Acid Reflux that can cause her to have esophagitis (for example another illness that would cause her to vomitt leading to esophagitis.) The reason that I ask is that she really is a happy girl now and from what I read about the disease and have heard about other children she seems much better off as far as the pain goes.... (which I am not complaining at all about that)

- Once the byopsies come back positive from the Endo. for Esophagitis is that considered a dx. for Acid Reflux or just that there is acid from vomitting causing inflamation???

She has what feels like every test in the book Upper GI's, Urianalysis, cultures, Renal scans, Cystic Fibrosis tests, Endoscopy, Sigoscopy(I think thats the name - colon), VCUG b/c of UTI at 2 mos. (Traces of VER) is there something else that could cause vomitting other than what she has been tested for????

- Would an endoscopy show if she has something wrong with the way that she swallows and feeds while eating from a bottle or is there seperate testing for that? While drinking from a bottle almost 1/2 the bottle drips out the sides of her mouth and the rest she vomitts. While eating solids when she is eating it she sucks like she is drinking a bottle.

She has an appointment on Wed. with her GI doc. but I wanted to get your opinion about all of this before we go.

Thanks,
Jen

Hi,

It is quite unusual for a baby in this situation to be fed with an NG tube. I think this indicates the severity and mystery of this problem. An endoscopy won't tell about swallowing quality. A videofluoroscopy study would. If you have a pediatric gastro person involved, this is the best bet in this complicated situation. Sorry I can't be of more help, Dr. Olson
