I appreciate a previous question answered-Thank you! I do have another question that seems everyone's fave....Is Prilosec (& other PPI's) really safe for infants? I freaked when I heard Prilosec wasn't FDA approved for babies under 2 yrs old as my 6 1/2 mth daughter was px'ed 2 ml of prilosec 2xday already at 2-3 weeks old! Shes been on it ever since (upped to 3 ml 2xday since 5 mths) I am sooo concerned that this wasn't smart & there may be awful side effects longterm down the road yrs from now or something. My pharmacist scared me even more by saying its absorbed systemically/not just locally & these pump inhibitors are pretty intense in a baby's body etc-& maybe I should try to decrease the med to 1xday or wean her asap etc... I am really confused as most folks say it is safe & there haven't been any negative results from the meds seen-but I wonder how long babies have been given these drugs & how we'd know anyway yet- Anyway, thought about switching to prevacid but then heard that too was not FDA approved either. Have any idea why they aren't approved yet & any other thoughts on the matter? I'd be so appreciative of any feedback on this issue.:hissyfit: Thanks so much, Regan

Hi,

Many meds we use in pediatrics aren't officially approved for certain age groups due to the lack of industry sponsored studies that are valid for these groups. The PPI meds are considered safe and effective and have a long track record in infants even as young as a couple of months. I have no qualms using them in this situation.

Good luck, Dr. Olson
