Ilana isn't a big spitter, but more than the boys were. The dr didn't seem to think DGE was a concern b/c she doesn't spit up a lot. Thoughts?

View Full Version : Can you have more silent reflux and DGE? thepeach80 01-21-2007, 09:39 AM Ilana isn't a big spitter, but more than the boys were. The dr didn't seem to think DGE was a concern b/c she doesn't spit up a lot. Thoughts? Mirra 01-21-2007, 10:01 AM Ya know, I don't really know about this. I always thought that DGE meant they had to spit up a lot. But Mason (silent refluxer) has always been constipated and when I expressed my concerns at the last visit, the GI said she has always felt he had motility issues meaning the food doesn't pass through fast enough causing him to back up and that she expects it gone by 2 years. I'm not really sure what the difference between food not passing through fast enough verses delayed gastric emptying is. It sounds like the same words to me. I would be curious to hear some opinions on this as well. thepeach80 01-21-2007, 10:32 AM I think DGE specifically involves the stomach not emptying fast enough, but I'm not sure if it involves the intestines, which sounds like maybe what you're DR thinks is going on w/ you guys. IMO I don't see a reason why you can't have more silent reflux and DGE? Just b/c it's in the stomach for a longer period, doesn't mean it has to come up does it? Mirra 01-21-2007, 11:14 AM That's a very good point! Maybe the intestines are a whole different thing. :) mommytothree 01-26-2007, 05:44 AM Typically Children with DGE do Vomit or Retch because they get so full since the stomach does not empty fast enough that their little bodies just can't take it. Some Children don't.....and I would say that yes there could be a DGE problem even without vomiting. As far as the intestines go what I have learned is that there can be Motility problems involving the intestines and Stomach.I know in our case because of the nature of Grace's problems when she gets constipated everything above moves even slower too.So you could have a child who has a problem below that is effecting the stomach's ability to empty.I hope that made sense...it's early!!! Minnie 01-26-2007, 08:29 AM Well According to Eric's GI no. He wouldn't even consider it with Eric. According to me, Yes. You can have "silent" reflux and DGE Alicia304 03-05-2007, 01:52 PM My son is a silent refluxer. His GI kept on swearing that he couldnt' have DGE b/c he didn't vomit or spit up. Finally, he did the test and found that my son was, indeed, significantly delayed. :) Alicia anna1 03-05-2007, 02:07 PM My son is a silent refluxer and has been diagnosed w/ DGE. They found it on his upper GI, so yes they can have silent reflux and DGE. Melissacarl 03-18-2007, 10:22 PM Ditto! My son is also a silent fluxer and has DGE... didn't know this forum existed... glad to have found it! tklavender 08-13-2007, 03:14 PM At what age did you begin to suspect this if they were diagnosed first as silent refluxers? Did it take a while to puttwo and two together or did you know as soon as the reflux was diagnosed? Tina alexsmom 08-18-2007, 05:13 PM My son has silent reflux and I'm thinking he has DGE. Although, he does not get constipated (accept when he was on carafate). Could he have DGE and still be having daily BM's? I think he has delayed emptying from the stomach to the intestines, but not from the intestines out. Does this make sense? |
