View Full Version : probiotics?
atomikblonde 01-19-2007, 05:01 PM I wasn't sure if this was the right place to post this thread, but it was the best I could do. Titus has been sick for quite a while and for various reasons was on 4 7-day courses of antibiotics in about 5-6 weeks. His illness (which is still mysterious) is getting better, but he can't sleep at all for being so majorly gassy. He just thrashes around and really doesn't sleep well at al unless he's held. The doctor thinks it might have been the antibiotics that killed all of his good bacteria and probiotics will help. I gave him some last night and will for another 6 or so nights. Does this sound right? Is there other homeopathic things that folks have tried for reflux and such? I'm really curious about all of this, particularly since Titus is also mysteriously having an allergic reaction to some yet-unknown substance.
Emily M 01-19-2007, 06:59 PM Rachel and I have discussed probiotics, I am almost positive that she has used them.
I have no experience, so I can not be of any help.
But, hopefully she will chime in soon. ;)
scarlet 01-20-2007, 09:30 AM I use probiotics regularly on both boys, and it generally keeps ear infections at bay, weird I know, but they are essentially replacing the bacteria that daily life kills off, like processed foods, illnes, drugs and helps with the immune function, I know that research is underway at the moment on moms who take it through out pregnancy, and it may be something that we all have to take like folate in the future.
We have a drink that is called yakult, I don't know if you guys have that, but the kids love the taste and drink it down, it does contain milk though, my kids are milk protein intolerent and don't react to it so that is something.
We take homeopathic remedies as well, if you want to go down this road for reflux, it is best to see a practicing homeopath rather than over the counter remedies, especially for children. We have been on them a little over 6 months, and to be truthful have not seen much of an improvement, and then about a month ago some of my sons symptoms started fading, I have no idea if it was the homeopathy or just growing out of things, but I say it is worth a try.
atomikblonde 01-21-2007, 09:54 PM I think we're going to talk to a homeopathic doctor, but we haven't called yet. I think it's worth a shot. The probiotics were the only thing I had the courage to try on my own because it's pretty straight forward. We've given them to him for 4 nights and there's been marginal improvement. We'll see what happens after a week.
I've never heard of that drink, but Titus can't have milk yet anyway. I think Whole Foods has an infant probiotic thing that was sold out when I was there, so I'm thinking about making it pretty regular in his routine. We'll see. sigh. poor little guy. He's so happy when he's not miserable. :)
Anna, Ava is on them. She had to go on an intensive antibiotic treatment at 4 weeks and I put her on those after that. We stoped for a while and then resumed again.
There are a few different kinds out there, but not all are ok for Ava, since some of them contain dairy and soy. The one we use is Babylife by Solaray, it is free of dairy and soy and she tolerates it really well. We have not had any gass or tummy rumbling episodes for a very long time. I doubled the dose when she was on Amox for sinus infection recently. And she did well.
Eliana's Mommy 01-22-2007, 07:23 AM Eliana was on 40 days of antibiotics and her pedi suggested lactobacillus (http://www.bacteriamuseum.org/species/lactobacillus.shtml) while on the antibiotics and after as well. I use http://www.vitacost.com/CountryLifeMaxiBabydophilus (http://www.vitacost.com/CountryLifeMaxiBabydophilus) It is free of yeast, wheat, soy, gluten, salt, starch, preservatives, artificial color, or flavorings. While on antibiotics I doubled the dose.
atomikblonde 01-22-2007, 09:50 PM thanks all! We need to get a baby version, but they were sold out when I was there, so I got a regular one that was free of all the allergen things. Th edoctor said to just pour the powder out of the capsule. We've been doing about half a capsule. Who knows if I'm doing it right. sigh.
