View Full Version : Flavoring compounded Prilosec

My dd is on 2 mg/mL Prilosec compound and takes 14 mL once per day (for 28 mg. total). It's quite a mouthful to be taking all at once; however, she's been doing well. We were recently out of town and had to have the 'scrip refilled at another pharmacy. The out-of-town pharmacy did NOT flavor the compound and it tastes terrible. She absolutely will not take it (usually takes it in a 1-oz. medicine cup) and this morning I resorted to putting it in a large oral syringe and shooting it toward the back of her mouth. She vomited.

Is there a safe way for me to flavor this at home? If I mix it with something (like a small amount of Neocate formula, juice, etc.), how much of the juice/formula is "safe" to give with the med and not interfere with it?

Thanks! :-)

Hi, actually when using a syringe to give meds, never direct it straight back, always to the cheek. Don't give the prevacid with food though. It should be on an empty stomach 1/2 hour before food. In talking with the pharmacy department at the IWK in Halifax N.S. they tell me that they only make unflavoured prevacid susp as we do as well. They were not familiar with a flavoured preparation but are getting back to me on this. In the meantime I wouldn't do anything but give it unflavoured and cold without any other food. Get back to you soon,

Thanks for your info! Actually, we've always had it flavored in the past and this is the first time it's been unflavored. Because she takes such a large amount all at once, it is difficult to get it down her. I normally give it an hour before food; however, in desperation the other day, I did try to mix it with Neocate (it didn't work, anyway).

The problem is that the stuff is pretty awful and she hasn't gotten any for the past sev. days because she either spits it out or vomits. :-( I'll keep trying.

HI, the children's hospital pharmacy just got back to me. They do not have any reference for flavouring of this particular product. Some pharmacies have a few different flavours that they can add to certain meds but without a reference proving it doesn't affect the prevacid, I can't make any suggestion as to what to add to it, sorry
