I'm a little confused about what can and can't be taken with carafate. My son is diagnosed with: a stomach that empties slowly, severe silent refluxer when sleeping, and esaphagitus. He takes prevacid (15 mg.) between 4-5 PM and 2ml of Carafate nightly before bed. (We can administer the Carafate every 4 hours as needed.) He seemed to be doing better, but now has taken another downward slide and is sufferring HEAPS again at night. I don't get it!:hissyfit: (Waking up screaming.) Can I give him Myloxx or Mylanta and Carafate? My GI said that Carafate was more effective than the other two, but I have heard many say that Myloxx or Mylanta have helped their little one. I'm still a "newbie" with all of the reflux terms and don't always understand "reflux lingo". Hugs in advanced for the great advice I know I'll get! (Oh, he is 22 pounds... don't know if that makes a difference.)

Hi, carafate (or sulcrate in Canada) is geared mainly towards protecting the mucosa of the gi tract and should not be given within 1/2 hour of antacids because of decreased binding of the sulcrate to the mucosa when the antacid alters the pH in the stomach. Remember that Carafate is not an antacid and you may still need the maalox or mylanta.
Hope this helps
