My 4 month old has started something new during breastfeeding and I wonder if its reflux related. He will tense up and then jerk back off the breast and then he acts as if he's trying to swallow but can't, or maybe that he's trying to gasp for breath but can't get air and its almost like I can hear him gulping deep in his throat. It scares me because it seems like he's choking or something. But he always recovers quickly and wants to go right back to the breast. He just got over a cold last week, and it seems like he might be swallowing some post-nasal drip while he eats, but I'm not sure. I swear everyday brings some new issue - maybe I just worry too much! Anyone else have a similar issue when feeding?

by the way, how cute is your pic of Roman...he is adorable!!!, anyway, back to the point....Naomi pulls off the breast and gasps and makes noise like that all the time. Sometimes i think that the letdown is too fast for her and she just can't take it all in at once. If he has just had a cold he may need some time on and off to get him to breathe better. Maybe try feeding him while lying down, that might make the letdown slower.....hope this helps...

Glad to know we're not alone. Now that you mention it, he does seem to do this shortly after I feel letdown, and I was diagnosed shortly after he was born with an overactive letdown. Makes sense! Thanks for helping me think straight! And thanks for the compliment - we think he's pretty cute too! You also have a little beauty!

glad I could help. Hope that he gets better. Sometimes if its reflux though, you can feel it coming up as they are feeding and they get really uncomfortable....hence the arching etc. I hope he gets better soon...

Hi there, my son used to do a similar thing also and I put it down to a couple of things, first he was so furious to soothe his throat, that he would get on with such vigour, only to have pain from lying down and making the reflux worse, he would pull off, recover and do it all again. I found b/f him on an angle so that he was positioned down a bit so he was more upright, was good for him,

I never had the problem of overactive letdown (), so it may be something like that also, try Nics suggestion and see how it goes.
