Hi.
I have a question about wheezing. Naomi has severe reflux due to slow gastric emptying due to a redundant bowel which pushes her stomach up to a horizontal angle and therefore doesn't empty properly. I notice a lot however, that when she has had a feed or food and I pick her up or sit her up she wheezes when breathing out. This only seems to occur after feeding and being upright. Does this mean she has aspirated? or could her stomach be pushing on the lungs because of the position that it is in? Just thought you might be able to help.

Thanking you in advance.

Nic

It could be positional, but more than likely, I would think aspiration. Wheezing is caused when the bronchioles constrict, narrowing the airway, or inflammation narrows the airway, causing turbulent airflow (and the wheezing noise). Is the sound coming from her chest or neck & nasal passages? If it seems to be upper airway (neck), it could be some food that she has refluxed sitting in the back of her throat and rattling. If it's coming from her chest, I would tend to believe she aspirated. I would certainly let her physician know about this. Hope this helps!

Hi.

thaks for your response. Sometimes she is wrattily, which would explain the food think she has refluxed up, but when she wheezes it sounds like it is from the chest. I will be telling my Pead about this definately!. Thanks for your help. Nic
