We do the car seat tests on all of our Intensive Care Nursery babies. Brenna had one before we could bring her home. They have to be strapped in just like you would be putting them in the car. Pulse ox goes on, then we watch them for 1 hour. Not many fail, but for the few that do, we get a car bed loaned to them until they can tolerate the infant seat. It's very reaasuring to know that your baby is ok before you take off in the car the first time.

Is that usually why they get a car bed? Or do preemies get it too?
I'm curious, a friend of mine, after she had her baby, she had one. I had never seen one before.

Wow, I have never heard of this before! That is really interesting. I don't think they do that here? I could be wrong though.

I've only ever heard of that in preemies. Thanks for posting that article!

I thought is was WAY cool (and it makes me feel better. A little less insane) because DH and I were so paranoid of that car seat. Eric had lot's of blue spells and choking spells it in and cried and wiggled, and grunted, and screamed in it. Eventually he cried at the site of it, and we actually had to hide it in the closet when we weren't using it. We called it his torture device.
Needless to say we never took Eric anywhere unless we HAD to. LOL

He still hates his car seat and it does make his reflux go. We just get there as quickly as possible.

LOL and DH wants to travel to New Brunswick Canada this summer. LOL yeah, right.

They usually desaturated because their head falls down to their chest and cuts off the trachea. With a car bed, they can lay flat and keep their airway patent. Usually it's our preemies that have difficulty with the carseat check.
