I'm exclusively BF my son who's now almost 6 months old. We started him on reflux meds at 3 weeks. He's now taking Prevacid solutabs 15 mg/day which seems to helping. He also has food allergy issues so I'm avoiding a bunch of foods. I started to get lax with my diet and his sleeping (which has never been good) is now even worse. I'm going back to a strict diet of no dairy, soy, wheat, corn, nuts, eggs, beef, oats and white potatoes. Anyway, I've never been a coffee drinker aside from my latte addiction. However, I've recently tried some decaf coffee which I like. It does have natural and artificial flavoring so I need to find out exactly what's in it, but it's pretty tasty. I've heard coffee can make reflux worse, but is it the caffeine or is it the actual coffee? Is it okay to drink decaf? Thanks!

I too feel like i am not eating much at the moment!!!!
I think coffee sets of K's reflux as well, i *think* its the caffine as it causes heartburn so i try and avoid fizzy drinks too! sometimes though i need caffine to keep me awake!
Gosh, I'm not sure. I, too, *Think* it's the caffeine in the coffee that does it...? Why not keep up your one or two cups a day while you go on the elimination diet. If you feel she's still having problems after a week or two, then try cutting out the coffee to see if it makes a difference.
Let me see if I can find more info on this--it's a really good question! ...especially since baby #2 will be here in Feb. and I'm wondering about my once-daily Coca Cola... :-)

Sorry ladies but both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee can stimulate acid production. Many researchers feel that there is something in coffee itself that does so. Besides decaffeinated coffee is not completely caffeine free there is 3-4% of the caffiene left over after the decaffeinating process.

Thanks for your responses! Do you think just one 6 ounce cup would worsen symptoms?? I know each child is different, but I'm just wondering if most of you completely eliminate or limit your intake of coffee. Thanks!

Every child is different. You could certainly try a few days drinking 6 ounces and see how she does. Then a few days off to see if there is any difference. There may be little difference for you to warrant giving it up. I did not drink coffee regularly when my refluxer was little so I can't tell you of any personal experience.
