View Full Version : What foods do you aviod?
mayasmommy28 11-29-2006, 04:06 PM I've been avoiding dairy - not all )like in proceesed foods) but anything like milk, cheese, yogurt etc.
tomato, cold cuts, bacon, acidic fruits, caffeine and carbonated beverages.
oh and chocolate! I miss that and my 1 pepsi a day the most!!
Do you notice a difference in your LOS when you consume this?
ANything else that you've noticed triggers reflux?
Katey 11-30-2006, 05:49 AM I think it really depneds on the individual child. Many kids can not tolerate milk and soy proteins, so often those are the first that are taken out.
Are you just trying to help the reflux or does you baby have sympotmes of protein intolerance? (gas, mucusy or bloody stools, vomiting, rash, exema)
I would start with all dairy and soy products and see where it goes from there. It takes a couple of weeks for the proteins to get out of your system, so don't expect to see a dif right away.
From what I have read the other stuff usually does not make a dif in breast milk, but I am no expert. I tried to eliminate dairy and soy, but I gave up and went to hypo formula.
Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes.
Katey beat me to it! I b'fed exclusively and eliminated just about everything I could think of; however, what helped me most was cutting out *all* dairy and soy (incl. that in processed foods). It took a few days, but I started to see marked improvement in my dd. We did figure out that she does have MSPI and she is still on a dairy/soy free diet (I'm no longer b'feeding--hello chocolate milk!).
It is really hard, especially at first; however, we have lots of list of "safe" (non-dairy, non-soy foods) for you to eat. I'll get you those links.
Also, I have to admit that while I'm not a caffeine addict (don't like coffee or tea), I really do enjoy a soda now and then. I think it's admirable that you've given up your Pepsi! However, once in awhile I think it might be okay to indulge in that. If you notice this makes the reflux worse, cut it back out again. :-)
I'm sending you big hugs! It's tough to try to figure this out and to send your own diet into upheaval in the process.
thepeach80 11-30-2006, 12:21 PM I'm dairy/soy free b/c the chances Ilana has problems like the boys are pretty good. I was eating 6 foods when I weaned Evan. It was torture (hence weaning to Neocate), but he was so much better. It was the first time in his life (he was almost 12 mos old) he felt good.
kkmum 12-04-2006, 09:22 AM I'm on the MSPI diet too its really hard esp with holidays coming up. I am thinking about trying Neocate but K won't drink from a bottle so i know a wean would be very traumatic and might cause complete feeding refusal.
K is bad everyday so its hard to tell if any foods make a difference but i do get fed up of torturing myself about everything i eat and if it makes a difference to her bad/good days:sad2:
I think dairy/soy are the main culprits, i have noticed some improvements in K since stopping these but not in the reflux itself as such!
Eliana's Mommy 12-04-2006, 10:28 AM dairy, soy, wheat, gluten, corn
thepeach80 12-04-2006, 09:17 PM Natalie, my diet didn't help Evan at all till I did the total elimination diet. I even did it through Thanksgiving! I cheated afterwards though and was up all night w/ Evan, but at least we then knew wheat was a definite problem. lol You might try it. I'm thinking I'm going to have to do it again come the new year if Ilana doesn't start responding better to her meds.
kkmum 12-07-2006, 10:24 AM I have been thinking of this too!!!
Any tips on what you can eat on an elimination diet?!!:smt102
