This is a question from poorbaby:

"First time on this site I have an almost 11 month old who is not babbling and I amvery concerned and I wonder if it is related to his reflux issue (ie irration to voal cords) Has anyone had the ph probe study done my son also has a chronic cough due to reflux?"

(Sorry, I'm sure there was a better way to start a new thread for you, but I'm feeling a bit dense tonight.)

Hi poorbaby and welcome to IRD!

Daniel had a ph probe done, and it showed plenty of reflux -- but I'm not sure how it would indicate damaged vocal cords. But, yes, his lack of babbling could certainly be a result of his reflux. Daniel also was not a babbler and had articulation issues once he did begin speaking, but at age 3, he's doing much better.

Emma is 9 1/2 months old and isn't really babbling yet. Everyone feels that it is due to her reflux. Since she is quite the puke queen with her reflux, it does irritate the throat (she just got an increase in meds)...

Emma is receiving speech therapy 2x a week thru early interventions ...

Don't know about a ph probe other than what I've read here. That is one test that Emma has not yet had!

By not babbling, do you mean your child makes no sounds at all?

Did you child coo around 3-4 months? Have you heard any sounds???

I would start by asking your dr if he/she thinks there is a reason to be concerned. Most states have some forum of Early Intervention program (if you are in the US) and you could see about getting an evaluation. It is better to be on the safe side. If there is a problem the earlier you catch it the more can be done.

Just FYI .. Cooing is different from babbling. Cooing is making vowel sounds only (ahhhh, ooooo, etc). Babbling requires consonant sounds (ma, ba, da, etc). Catherine did not really babble until she was 18mo or so.
