Hello and thanks.

My now Ex-Pediatrician prescribed my son oral Albuterol for bronchiolitis (son had been choking on mucus too). After visitng another dr due to my son becoming choked 3 times in 12 hours on mucus......the new Dr said that he himself had not prescribed oral albuterol in over 20 years! that it is out of date and shouldnt be used anymore...orally. IS this true?

I am angry because my son reacted violentally to it...acted like he was on crack or something...just flailing about in hyperactivity. Not to mention it didnt really help at all.
Thanks for any information.

BTW...he is now on XOPENEX...via nebulizer. MUCH BETTER RESULTS.

my son is being tested for whooping cough and rsv.

Warmly, Paula

albuterol (in canada we use salbutamol alot) has an effect where it can cause stimulation for the first hour or so after a dose. In adults this may feel almost like getting too much coffee but in younger kids it may be a little more severe. When you first start these meds you may see extra mucus secretion or bringing up more mucus as the airway opens up. This drug does not dry up secretions it only opens up the airways by relaxing the muscles around them. Xopenex is not yet available here in Canada but is similar to the albuterol. You may just have needed a dose adjustment. If this doesn't do it then you may get a steroid (anti-inflammatory) inhaler to relax the inflammatory process. I wouldn't be to hard on the physician. Unfortunately side effects can happen and no one really knows what one will happen to which person until it is given. Every physician has their favorites or regulars that the write for.
Good luck with the inhalers - Graham Ph.C.
