View Full Version : Toddler reflux behavior
kimber 11-21-2006, 07:17 PM Hi ladies
Zach recently started this weird behavior....
He was never a big drooler as a kid (even when teething) but has been drooling a lot lately, and is obsessed with having his hands in his mouth
He also does this weird racking his face thing, playing with his nose, then starts licking his hand
Is this reflux related, OCD, seasonal allergies?
He has been off prevacid for 4 days and has actually been doing it LESS
Is it just an age thing?
Just curious if anyone else is familiar with this type of behavior
Thanks, Kim
Emily M 11-21-2006, 07:37 PM Oh Kim, I hope not reflux, but it sounds like it could be that or alleriges.
In this allergy book that I have, the symptoms you described are in there as an allergy, but I do know that those are also reflux symptoms.
Leigh 11-21-2006, 08:01 PM I forgot Em has the same book I have.;-) The face thing might be what is called the "allergic salute", so I would investigate that further. As far as the drool goes, Curran was like something out of Alien3 as he was constantly drooling, even at the age of 3.5 years. Ick. I sort of found out that it could be a condition known as "waterbrash" and is essentially like a hypersalivation which occurs. Nothing dangerous or to worry about unless they are choking on it.
Becky in NM 11-21-2006, 08:09 PM Besides the drooling (which only improved in the last nine months or so as he began to be more willing to swallow), I've never seen these symptoms in Daniel.
B only drools a little after we give her daily dose of Prilosec (I think the bad taste makes her not want to swallow). She does sometimes "rake" her face and she really, really enjoys digging around in her nose. I think these are related to nasal congestion. Our house is really dry and it makes us all a bit stuffy. I'd be willing to bet Zach's mannerisms *might* be due to allergies or stuffy nose...?
kimber 11-22-2006, 07:03 AM Thanks guys for your feedback...I appreciate it
This is so frustrating if it is more seasonal allergies etc because with Zach being on 3 meds already, what else can we do
The ENT said his adenoids looked fine etc
It seems Zach has a little cold this am...should be interesting to see how the prevacid wean goes
I'm such a nervous wreck...trying to play it cool...
Yesterday he screamed when eating a piece of apple, he got a piece of peel stuck in his tooth (deep breathe)
Emily M 11-22-2006, 08:12 AM On top of him not feeling good, you are dealing with the "toddler issues" as well. Which I can not imagine, my girls were handful enough, without being sick.
I hope things get better. Poor Zach. :(
my2guys 11-27-2006, 10:37 PM OMG!! Someone else who's kid does the hand licking thing!! It drives me nuts!! I haven't noticed him drooling, but he is putting more and more stuff in his mouth. I figured it was due to seeing the baby do it. I am still not 100% convinced that his reflux is completely gone...we have food issues, and he clears his throat a bunch. Of course, what is normal picky toddler behavior or allergies vs. reflux and other things that mimic it? I hope you get your little man figured out!
kimber 12-01-2006, 12:43 PM Hi Jessica
Just came across your post
You're the winner....ding ding ding...
I haven't come across any other mom that has a hand licker...LOL
zach is still doing it a ton...he has been off prevacid for 14days and I haven't noticed any change, for the most part, with his sleeping/feeding etc
I'm confused...i plan to talk to the new Gi about it on Friday
kimber 12-01-2006, 12:51 PM I just wanted to add you mentioned Nathan has bad allergies and is on allergy meds
zach is also on singulair, clarinex and nasonex.......maybe it is more an allergy/nasal drip thing?
