Hi

I have 2 questions

1. When weaning cold turkey from a PPI...how long does the drug remain in your system....how long will your boby still benefit from the meds?

2. Are experiencing side effects of med all or nothing?
Could someone who takes the same exact med/dose at the same time everyday experience side effects on some days but not others?

Thanks so much

Hi kim , sorry it looks like the answer I gave dissapeared. Re: the PPI, you really only get the benefit of blocked proton pumps for 24 hours after the last dose. Re: the side effect question, unfortunately yes. This is not the norm but some days you can get a side effect with a med but then not the next. Any particular examples you have experienced?

Thanks so much for your response

Regarding PPI's, I thought I heard/read that the PPI stays in your system for some time and after you stop taking it...that it can 'stay in your system' for 3-14 days

I took my ds off prevacid tabs cold turkey 7 days ago and put him on pepcid
He is MUCH MUCH less fussy...
I'm thinking the prevacid MAY have caused him gas, cramps, stomach pain....I asked about side effects because he had good days mixed with the bad days...because of that I wasn't sure if he could be experiencing negative side effects of prevacid

I'm thrilled he is doing so well now, but I was afraid he might be doing so well because the PPI in still in his system and he is taking pepcid

One last question......he is 31 pounds and taking 1.2ml of pepcid 2x per day (total 2.4 ml per day)
Is this a good dose?
It was prescribed based on his weight 10mnths ago...I plan to call his GI Monday but just wanted your input

Thanks again...sorry for the lengthy question

Hi, although it is protein bound, the 1/2 life is very short in the body and any appreciable effects are not normally noticable beyond a day or so. Even so the pepcid and ppi could have been taken together. The pepcid dose for gerd in infants is 0.5 mg/kg/dose twice daily. What is the concentration in the formulation you have?

Hi again

We are day 13 NO prevacid...I assume by now it is def. out of his system completely?
The bottle of pepcid I have is constituted to 50ml, each 5ml contains 40mg famotidine
Zach is 3yrs old and 31 pounds

Thanks again

Hi kim, that pepcid dose is right where it should be and the prevacid is quite gone from his system.
Thanks, Graham Ph.C.
