View Full Version : Could it be asthma?
my2guys 11-19-2006, 12:13 PM So Nick seems to be doing a bit better in the reflux department, but now I wonder if he could have asthma. About a month ago, he got a cold...no big deal. When it was still going on 2 1/2 weeks later, I took him to the pedi. She said that it could maybe be a sinus infection, but that he's so little, that it would not be her first guess. Her first guess was that he needed more time to get over his cold. Well, the nose has stopped running, and all other cold symptoms are gone, except for night coughing. He wakes up in the middle of the night coughing, sometimes for 1-2 hours. At times, it sounds productive, other times, it does not. I was thinking maybe post nasal drip...but there is no coughing during naps. I know asthma can present this way...have any of your kids presented this way??? I have not heard him wheeze, but that doesn't mean he's not. What should I do??? Do I take him back to the pedi??? He's pretty ok during the day, maybe coughs a couple of times, but the night thing is really taking it's toll on us both. Help!!
KaitlynsMom 11-19-2006, 12:50 PM I would suggest a trip to the ped, just to rule out anything. It's better to be sure than let something simmer. Just tell her whats going on... usually if sleep is interrupted there is something going on.
I've noticed my daughter kind of snoring or breathing heavy like while sleeping and sometimes she wakes up coughing like she breathed in some saliva... it's weird!
Anyway, I would go talk to the Ped about it and look in to it! Good luck!
Shaes Grammy 11-19-2006, 05:53 PM Jessica, when my asthma was bad, I coughed all night long but I never wheezed. Then during the day I would mostly cough only after eating!
I agree with Michelle, I'd get Nick to the doctors if the night coughing is bad enough that it is actually waking you up, just to be sure.
Best wishes
Jean
my2guys 11-19-2006, 07:05 PM Thanks! Nick's coughing does wake me up....and him. He starts coughing like crazy, cries, etc. I have to go in to his room, pick him up and comfort him until he's done coughing and can go back to sleep. He's pitiful. :(
The only other thing I can figure, is that maybe his reflux is not doing as well as I thought....but night time is the only bad time. I stopped the thickened feeds, but he was already coughing before I did that....so I don't think that has anything to do with it. *Sigh* If it's not one thing, it's another.
Emily M 11-19-2006, 08:18 PM I agree w/Michele, I would talk to the doc again.
We are going through this as well, going on 8 weeks. We go tomorrow and I'm hoping for a diagnosis or SOMETHING. Jack woke me up two nights ago coughing his little head off. Poor baby. :( mine and yours. ;)
Eliana's Mommy 11-20-2006, 08:36 AM Eliana is fine throughout but coughs alot at night. Sometimes she coughs all night long. She was diangosed with Asthma Nov 10. And yes coughing is a sign of Asthma. Hope this helps!

If your child is having some breathing problems or has been diagnosed with asthma, you probably have some questions. You may be quite worried about your child, but remember—knowledge is power. The more you learn about the problems your child is having and how to control them, the more you'll be able to help him or her keep being an everyday kid. Only your doctor can diagnose asthma.
Why does asthma make it hard to breathe?
Asthma is a common condition that interferes with your child’s breathing by preventing air from flowing freely into and out of the lungs. During an asthma attack, two things happen:
The airways experience inflammation (swelling and irritation)
The muscles around the airways constrict or tighten
Inflammation and constriction narrow the breathing passages, which can cause a variety of asthma symptoms. And when the airways are swollen and narrowed, it becomes harder to breathe.

The good news is that with proper treatment even young children with asthma can continue to eat, sleep, and play without having symptoms. First, it helps to have a good understanding of asthma symptoms.

my2guys 11-20-2006, 06:07 PM Thanks everyone! I think I will give the pedi a call in the morning. His coughing is a bit better, but still pretty bad, especially at night. He is also covered in eczema for the past 2 days. DH, Nate, and I both have eczema. None of us have asthma, but the two go hand in hand.

I never knew that and I always had excema as a young adult? But only got the asthma a couple years ago.
my2guys 11-21-2006, 09:51 AM Jean,
Yep, eczema and asthma are both autoimmune issues. There is a strong link between the two. Of course, not everyone with eczema has asthma, and not everyone with asthma has eczema. The link is pretty strong though!
Shaes Grammy 11-22-2006, 08:08 PM Very interesting. You learn something everyday. I should go Google that.
Funny now that I think about it, b/c I was told eczema was from stress (a poor marriage) and I believe that asthma is also aggravated by stress?
Hey I should have a :drinkalot: and maybe have less stress! ;-)
Thanks for the info.
my2guys 11-22-2006, 08:23 PM The pedi appt was kind of a waste. "His lungs are clear...maybe it's postnasal drip." Well, that would be the case if he coughed his head off during naps!! They were impressed by the amount of eczema all over him....poor little guy. Anyway, I hope that appt doesn't cause him to get sick. We were sitting by RSV kid (didn't know when we plopped down next to him.) Then, barfing boy yacked his lunch a mere feet from where we were sitting!! Poor kid...he was trying to get his mom's attention, but she was too busy trying to pay the copay. So, he lost his cookies in front of everyone :puke: That did get her attention!
