Hello-

My son was just recently put on erythromycin, his already on axid and takes mylanta as well. I had a few questions regarding the medication administration-

1. Can the the erythromycin be given at the same time as the axid, or will it affect the axid's effectiveness?

2. Should mylanta be given an hour after erythromycin as it is w/ axid?

3. How long will it take to see an effect from the erythromycin?

4. Are mucous in the stools a side effect of erythromycin?

Thank you!

Hi Anna, sorry for the delay, you can give them together without the effectiveness of either being changed. In regards to erythromycin with mylanta, there seems to be an increase in effectiveness with the erythromycin when given with the antacid because it is not eliminated from the body as quickly for some unknown reason ( this is really insignificant though so no problem giving them together). Assuming the erythromycin is being given for motillity and not infection, you should see the results almost immediately with the antibiotic - i.e. with each dose). A change in stools is not uncommon but watch for what appears to be generallized abdominal pain or blood in the stools.
Thanks, Graham Ph.C.
