HI everyone,

I was just after your advice if you dont mind.

Ellie was slightly prem, then diagnosed with GERD after an apnea spells at 6 weeks. Been on 15mgs of prevacid since.

Things have not gone well, Ellie has cried and cried during feeds, but always seems rampantly hungry, and will scream blue murder to be fed every two hours, even still at 7 and a half months.

She has been on thickened feeds due to choking and dysphagia, and zantac as well in the evenings full dose for her weight. For some reason, everything seems to work really well for about a week, then goes back down hill again. Back to man night wakings and hardl napping through the day.

Anway, my consultant wanted us to try erythromyacin, we tried domperidone, which I felt in increased her hunger even more! She use to be a silent refluxer, but since I stopped BFing her, she has brought up much more milk. Now on solids I dont think the are helping either.

She had a banana last week, and seven hours later brought it up. She is bringing up solids 3 and half hours after eating them, and milk 3 hours after.

Does it sound like it? Im seeing my consultant next week, and I thought I should try it now before I see her.

Its so annoying, as I know when the med's do work, my happy content baby is lovely, then the rest of the time, wingey, crying,, and not at all content.

Anyway, any feed back would be lovely,

Thanks Cheryl x

It could possibly be, I'm no DGE expert so I dont have any advice from experience but it sounds like something I would mention to the Ped or the GI (if you have one). It might be something they want to look into... there may be a motility issue going on.

Good luck!! :)

I don't have any experience with DGE so I am not much help. There must be somthing going on for her to still be having so many problems. I hope you are able to figure it out and get her eating and feeling better.

Hopefully someone with dge experience will chime in.
I will see if I can find someone. ;)

It sounds like a delayed type of reaction. Your Drs must assume this as you are trying domperidone and erythromyacin, this will make her more hungry, but also hopefully speed up the amount of food going through her system.

Is it any better (the reflux) on these meds? Was the vomiting occurring when she was on the DGE meds?

maybe if you are worried you can ask for the test.

First of all let me give you hug  'cause I know how scary it is to have a little turn blue on you and scream at the top of their lungs. My DD has DGE and she does the same thing. She brings up formula (thickened w/ rice) almost 2 1/2 later. It does sound like DGE to me. I'm really surprised that none of the motility drugs that your using have worked. My daughter was on Reglan for a while and it worked wonders, unfortunately, the side effects were really scary so I decided to take my chances w/ just prevacid and zantac. If you deem the side effects outweigh the benefits this might be something to try. I have also found that formula that is "predigested" such as alimentum have helped a great deal. These are gentler on the tummy and definately easier to digest. I can also suggest to switch to Dr. Brown's bottles because air bubbles are also very troublesome w/ DGE since the also slow down the motility of the tract even more. Burp after every ounce, as well. Even after all these steps Peanut still spits up undigested formula, but not as frequent. If I can be of any more help, please, don't hesitate to PM me.

It definetly sounds like DGE if she is spitting up hours after eating, especially if it's undigested food. How much are you feeding her every 2 hrs? Could it be that she is comfort feeding and overful? Or is the food undigested? My son does this as well w/ solids and sometimes formula comes 3hrs + after he eats. The undigested formula looks like it looks in the bottle except very slimy as it mixes w/ mucous from the stomach....purees come back up the same way they went down...pretty gross. We finally got a diagnosis and started the erythromycin yesterday. Our GI said that we should see a noticeable difference w/ the erythromycin w/ in 1 week, if not to call back and they would prescribe something else. I would definelty discuss this w/ the ped/GI. Not sure about the constant feeds, my ds is content w/ feeds every 5 hrs, but we haven't been on the erythromycin long enough to know if he will want to feed more often yet. Good Luck.
