My daughter is 10 months old and currently on Zantac for reflux, albuterol & flovent for asthma symptoms. Both asthma & allergies run in the family, my husband is on Zyrtec (sp?) for his allergies. After a period of wheezing and being in the hospital overnight, our daughter is doing better than she was but still has a slight cough, runny nose and congestion which I thought may be allergy related. She also rubs her nose quite a bit, so much so at times that its red. Her doctor said to see how she does during the fall/winter and if she gets worse, we could try singulair. In your opinion, would it be best to wait until then or would it be ok to try and over the counter allergy medicine and if so, which is the safest? Thank you..

Hi, for an allergic kid with related asthma, singulair would be a good choice. I agree about the waiting for a while as you don't want to use meds if they might not be needed. I generally don't recommend daily usage of antihistamines in that age group without the doctor being in on it. You have probably done this already given the medical problems in the house but do an inventory of the things in the house that could make the condition worse over the next few months (carpets, pets, any nicnacs that can collect dust, the type of heat you use, keep the humidity low and keep an eye on the temp in the baby's rm esp overnight, try the allergenic slip covers for the pillow, mattress, keep vacuum bags or filters cleaned out, and make sure to keep up the flovent to prevent flare ups ).
