I noticed that Cameron had rough skin on her chins about 6 months ago but really noticed it this morning. It's not red at all just really rough. At our 12 month well baby this morning the ped said it's probably excema. He said to use Eucerine on it and it may get better. Is this just dry skin? Or is it an allergy? Does it go away? What the heck is it? Don't ask me why I didn't ask the ped this...you know how appt's go. esp with a crying tired baby.

Sounds like dry skin. Jack use to get patched on his back. We tried a lot of products and found huggies natural stick. It's easy to use and not greasy. It cleared up in a couple of days.

I don't think it is an allergy necessarily (not sure though) but certain things can bring it on, some foods, fabrics, changes in environment. Dylan has it, he gets it on his face, chin and cheeks sometimes, and on the back of his right upper arm and around his ankle on his right leg (not sure why just those spots). Our ped. said to use either Eucerin or Aveeno for daily mainentance and if it flares up (Dylan is teething right now and I noticed when he is drooling a lot his chin gets worse, kinda bumpy, red and rough). In those cases the ped. said I can used hydrocortisone 2% cream. She said not to use it more than 2-3 times a day for a max of 7 days in a row though b/c it does contain steroids. I usually find that I only need to apply it for a day or two for it to clear up and then I go back to the Aveeno. I put it on with each diaper change and after baths. It does help alot.

Excema is usually bumpy, I think I mentioned that Dylan's skin gets bumpy, not just dry. It usually gets dry when it is starting to clear up.

Ditto what Stephanie said. Ava has it right now on her chin, around her mouth, back of her knees and back and around her elbows. We use organic soap for babies with no soap in it and I apply Hydro 1% on those spots twice a day. It flares and goes away, but definately is bumpy and red, not just dry.

Watch it and try bathing her with cetaphil soap. That should be gentle enough.

Emma did not have bumps with her eczema. She was very dry and flaky, sometimes even looking scaly. Eczema rarely develops on moist areas (diaper area). Emma had to see a pediatric dermatologist due to hers being severe eczema (It was really bad and thickened on her elbows and ankles). Eucerin, aquaphor, cetaphil did not work. The only things that helped (ever so slightly) was organic unrefined shea butter and coconut oil.

The doctor put her on medicated ointment, 2.5% hydrocorisone ointment, special lotion for her scalp, and hydroxyzine and it has cleared up within a week of starting the meds.

There are too many different skin ailments for a diagnosis to be made yourself. Best to have the ped look at it.

Thanks everyone! I did notice at an early age that her skin was sensitive to johnson/johnson and gerber soaps but she did well with aveeno baby wash.. I think it's worse because we're taking showers with her and she's not soaking in a tub ya know? we only have a huge jaccuzzi tub and we're cold when we soak with her because we can't fill it, like at all..lol. I'm going to try some more mild body soaps on her and some other moisturizers that you all recommended.

Jane - the ped did see it today and said it was mild excema...no red bumps...so that's good news. Now that I think of it...I have it too! Just never knew what it was...When the weather is dry like it is now here in San Diego, I get dry white patches on my upper arms and sometimes face.

Ella - What's the brand of the organic "no-soap" baby soap you use?

Yes, it's called Huggies soothing naturals. It looks like a deodorant stick. It with the baby bath products. You just turn the bottom and smooth on. It penetrates right in the skin and you have no mess on your hands or clothes.

The dermatologist also said to soak Emma 2x a day for 5-10 minutes min (no more than 15) and immediately after, apply a heavy based cream like eucerin or cetaphil or aquaphor or vaseline. It helps keep the moisture locked in.

Another thing when it is dry indoors (as we now have heat and it tends to dry out the air) is to keep a humidifier running at night in their room.

Mustella also offers a great "hydrating" stick that is hypoallergenic.

Ginette, what we use is called Earths Best by Jason baby shampoo and body wash. Lavender. Its 70% organic and is hypo allergenic. It contains no parabens and won't irritae eczema. I use it for the baby and for her brother who is 4yo. They both love it.

There is also other one you can try. It's called Avalon Organic Baby shampoo. Its 100% natural and is awesome.

Both could be found at whole foods.
I hope you like it.
