View Full Version : Hospital Admission is on!
munkeesmama 10-25-2006, 11:50 PM Well Emma's admission to the hospital has FINALLY been put on the Calendar for monday the 30th. We have to be there at 9 a.m. She has to be NPO after 7 a.m. and she'll be having the scope done at 11 or 11:30 She said we did not have to take her off meds for this procedure. She also said she will not be going under general anestesia (as she has a past of ongoing apnea and bradycardia). Do they normally do this under general? It was my understanding they did and I'm somewhat concerned with her not.
Anyways, I discussed the possibility of a g-tube with her and she mentioned that there would still be the risk of aspiration if we did a continuous feed overnight, and that if her reflux is "that bad" and nothing shows from the biopsy, like allergies or anything that she may go ahead and proceed with the fundo/pyloriplasty. Of course she would consult with us first. I'm not quite on board with the fundo but I know i'm tired of my baby being miserable and not being able to sleep for more than an hour or two TOPS at a time at night and getting most of her nutrition at night. i would rather "test drive" so to speak a g-tube and see if that helps some of the problem before jumping to the fundo. Any insight or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
This also comes at a bad time since I've bee diagnosed with a somewhat rare sinus "disease" of my frontal lobe sinuses and the surgery needed is somewhat risy and the recovery is painful and long "2-3 weeks" to be functional. Surgery won't be until December though so I'm hoping to have Emma under control BEFORE then. If you want to read more details about me and the surgery it's in my blog www.munkeesmama.blogspot.com (http://www.munkeesmama.blogspot.com) Otherwise, any insight, advice, experience regarding to emma would be appreciated!
eaglemansbaby1124 10-26-2006, 12:16 AM Good luck with the scope. I hope it will give you some answers. As far as I was to understand they are put under general anesthesia. KC was unser for about and hour for the scope and biopsy. I was told it is to difficult to do the scope while awake. Oh and good luck with your surgery. I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers.
hi
sorry to here about your sinus problem good luck for the op xxxx
I also thought that the scope was done under general, but we where to ld the same thing by miki's gi as she has apnea they aere going to try and do it without general, they did say however if they cant they will put her under and then monitor her during and after, How they do it i dont know we are waiting for an apointment Let me know how they do Emma's with out general, and if mikis is done first i will let you now how they do it
Its a shame they will not try the g tube to see if it helps
good luck
anna1 10-26-2006, 05:14 AM Good luck with the scope. Hope everything goes well with Emma. Keep us updated!
Sam's Mom 10-26-2006, 06:00 AM usually the scope is done with sedation, but every kid is different and every hospital is different. Good Luck. I hope you get a plan in place before you are out of comission.
sixdogssixcats 10-26-2006, 06:08 AM Good luck with the scope and biopsies. Catherine's entire procedure - upper endoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and biopsies - took about 20 minutes. It was over before we knew it!
Like most of the other moms said, the 'scope is usually done with general anesthesia on babies under 1 or 2 y.o. I would *assume*, though, that they'll give her a local to numb the area; however, I am not a doctor and don't know that for sure.
We had the same experience Lesley did--B's 'scope went very quickly. She was cranky, distended and a bit disoriented afterward, but was back to her old self the next day.
Keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well! :-)
Emily M 10-26-2006, 07:51 AM Oh good luck. and ((((hugs))))
JacksonsMommy 10-26-2006, 08:05 AM Good luck I hope everything goes well!! We will be thinking of you :)
AvasMommy 10-26-2006, 09:16 AM For all three of her scopes, one with biopsies, Ava was sedated w/ Versed and Fentanyl, both very short acting, and the whole procedure (including her g-tube placement!) lasted no more than 25 min, tops. Like Lesley said, over before you know it!
Good luck, Ava and I will be thinking about you guys, and definitley keep us posted!!! Sounds like you've got a lot coming up here...big hugs, and our thoughts are with you!
munkeesmama 10-26-2006, 11:38 AM Lauren, they said she will be put under "conscious sedation" due to her past history of having trouble coming out of anesthesia and requiring the ventilator too long. I'm giong to discuss this with her doctor on Friday though.
Amy, I'll let you know how she does. Her doctor mentioned that we would discuss it after the scope. I'm hoping that means we'll discuss it RIGHT after soi if she is gonna have it done they can do it while she's already there undergoing this stuff.
Amanda, we have some family lined up to help with the kids. Most likely we will either hire a nanny or possibly try to hire a postpartum doula (I'm a doula and know a few) to help out. I'm just glad I went with my gut and didn't take on any clients for the holiday season!
Leslie and Mary, Thanks for letting me know how quick it is. Her last surgery was supposed to be about an hour and they didn't come out for almost 2. turns out everytime they tried to extubate her she would hold her breath/stop breathing!
Thanks Lindsay, Good to know that it didn't take long even with the g-tube and everything. Also makes me think there's a chance they can go ahead and do the g-tube while we're there. ::crossing fingers::
Everyone else, I didn't want to leave you out, so thanks for your well wishes!

I just wanted to add that we have had the scope under a GA and Parker has apnea as well, and all went fine in and out in 15 minutes. A bit longer coming out of it and in a really bad mood but fine.
Hopefully the twilight is all you guys need, especially since her past history.
Good luck with your upcoming surgery too, anything must be incredibly painful, you are so good in getting your daughter sorted out first.
munkeesmama 10-27-2006, 10:42 PM Thanks for the reassurance Rachel! Emma had another weight check and is down another 1/2 lb from a week ago. GRRR.
scarlet 10-27-2006, 11:31 PM More weight loss, I am sorry to hear that, hopwfully some of these tests will be able to sort some things out.
sorry to here emma has lost more weight how much does she weigh now
i hope you get some answers soon
we are thinking of you
Shaes Grammy 10-28-2006, 11:54 AM Oh, Elaina, so sorry to hear about your sinus surgery. That is awful just a long recovery when you have little ones to take care of. I had sinus surgery, but it was just regular I guess that everyone has. It was day surgery but turned into another day for me. I had polyps so I guess that is pretty routine. I NEVER miss time from work and yet with this I did take an extra day off. I think just b/c it is your hear you may want to rest more.
What were your symptoms, for having to have it done.
The pictures of Emma are soooo cute. I hope the scope goes easy for her.
Best wishes
munkeesmama 10-28-2006, 01:04 PM She's 13 lbs. 4 oz now. She was 13 lbs. 12 oz.
munkeesmama 10-28-2006, 01:07 PM Jean, what's strange in my case is here were absolutely NO sinus symptoms. I started getting migraines which weren't reacting to the strong meds. They tried 3 or 4 on me. I've been dizzu for months, lack of balance. Saw a nuerosurgeon who said the right side of my body had "reduced reflexes" and that my left pupil was dilated (all headaches are on the left front part of my head. some of them truly dibilitating). They sent me for an mri almost expecting to find a tumor and we were prepared for that. Instead they came back with my frontal lobe sinuses were completely blocked and that they're really not sure why i've had NO sinus troubles. So I then went for a 3d catscan to plan the surgery. My sinus cavities are somewhat narrowed and very thin along with the bottome portion of the sinus being "calcified" which makes it more diffiucult. We're looking at a possible date of December 27th, which would be good since it's AFTER Christmas. He said 2-3 weeks for recovery and needing a nanny/childcare. :(
munkeesmama 10-28-2006, 01:09 PM Rachel, I just notice in your sig it says "and is GOING rgeat guns again" I think you meant. GROWING great guns again. If i'm wrong than I'm sorry. Just caught my eye though. And parker is such a cutie!
Shaes Grammy 10-28-2006, 02:24 PM I've always had migraines (puke your guts out and not leave bed type of migraine). I thought when I left my ex they would go away LOL. Actually though the past couple years they have been better. Maybe the sinus surgery helped that as well. I never thought about that.
I pray this helps you. There is nothing worse than not feeling well.
Sam's Mom 10-28-2006, 05:17 PM I just wanted to add that Sam has had issues with anesthesia as well--required a prolonged intubation after his fundo. i would stick with the sedation over general anesthesia when possible.
I will be thinking of you---good luck!!!!
