Once upon a time there was a beautiful boy named Michael Scott. He was born on 9/8/06 after a precipitous (1 hour) labor and his mom hadn't had enough time to get an epidural even though she had been induced 8 hours earlier! His mom and dad had chosen to be surprised by his gender and were thrilled to have a baby brother for their older son, Jack.
Michael weighed 8 lbs., 6 oz. and was 19 1/2" long. He seemed fine initially except for being very "mucousy" and having to be suctioned frequently and aggressively. Mom tried nursing him but she had the same latching problems she had experienced with Jack, and Michael couldn't seem to keep the breastmilk down. He was a VERY eager eater, though. As Michael continued to have apparent breathing problems, he was taken to the NICU for observation and was hooked up to a respiratory monitor. They also tried feeding him some formula that he didn't keep down well, either.
Ultimately, Mom had to go to the NICU every 3 hours to nurse Michael. But since she couldn't get him to latch on properly (even with the help of the Lactation Consultant) it was a very frustrating process for both of them. Michael was peeing and pooping well, though, so no one seemed particularly concerned. Then Michael went home with Mom and Dad 2 days after he was born. Mom continued to nurse him unsuccessfully and he went almost 24 hours without peeing or pooping so they were at the doctor's office the day after he came home. Mom explained her difficulties attempting to feed Michael so it was no surprise that he was dehydrated and had already lost a LOT of weight. The doctor gave them formula to feed him and said he was just a "fast eater" and that's why he wasn't keeping anything down.
