My 10 week old is currently on 7.5 mg Prevacid, 2x/day, and Zantac 1ml 2x/day. We saw the specialist this week and she had me change how I give the meds. She wants me to give the Zantac about 1/2 hour before the Prevacid. From everything I've read, giving the Zantac too close to the Prevacid makes the Prevacid less effective, and when I questioned her, she said something about the PH levels.

Since we have started doing this, my son has taken a turn for the worse. Coincidence? What are your thoughts on the dosing?

Kim, I really don't think that giving the dose of zantac at the same time or 1/2 hour before makes a big difference. Prevacid granules are coated to protect the drug until it finds a basic environment (not acidic). It has been found that giving something that immediately raises the gastric pH like maalox really doesn't affect the drug that much. Giving zantac 1/2 hour earlier won't make that big a change either way. The change may be more of a coincidence.
