we are on day two of zegerid 10mg BID. My 4 month old is having liquid stools that smell really bad (sorry for the TMI). Is this a side effect? Do you know if it usually goes away? Thanks for your time.

Hi, the chances are good that this could be from the zegerid and regarding the TMI it may also develop into discoloured feces. It is probably better to continue with the zegerid for a few days until the body starts accepting the drug better, rather than come off of it and go back on it only to have the side effect return. Watch for excessive fluid loss though (no tears, poor skin tone, decreased urine output), especially if the loose stools continue.
Thanks, Graham Ph.C.

If she does get dehydrated is it ok to give a 4 month old pedialyte, or should I just take her in to the doc. The reason I am asking is we are heading into the weekend now so I would have to take her to the hospital or quick care clinic instead of her regular pediatrician.

Laura, sorry for the late reply. Strictly speaking, you should take any dehydrated child (or adult for that matter) to outpatients. The trick is determining if they are dehydrated. Generally speaking, diarrhea for more than 24 hours in a 4month old will do this. Thanks Graham Ph.C
