hey guys

mikis pead, has told me that the gi will do a gastric emptying study on miki before they do a fundo, but i am a bit confused about how she coulkd have dge seen as she has already had the pyloric muscle cut when she was 4 weeks old, since she had that done they have done another scan to see if liquid passed through the pylors and it does so i dont see how she can have dge. i could be way of the mark but i think that her pains is more the food going through the bowels not the stomache

i guess my question is is dge refering to food pasing through the pyloris or the bowels or could it be either?

and can a child that has already had pyloric surgery (pyloricotomy) have dge?

i know this is probably a stupid question and i have tried to google it but cant seem to get the corect answer

thanks guys

Sorry Amy I really don't know, I am going to bump this and get someone to have a look at it.

I would say that they are two separate issues. The pyloric muscle was the cause of stenosis and likely projectile vomitting, the DGE is a motility issue and the two are separate.

DGE is when food stalls or moves very slowly through the stomach. A "normal" person will have food empty out at 50-70% within one hour, anything less than that is considered DGE. Iain was at 24% at one hour and 45% at 2.5 hours. He was labelled as mild to moderate. There are kids here who have been 11 to 15% emptied at the 1.5 hour mark...

I do know that there are problems associated with having a fundo with a child who has DGE, I hope other fundo moms will see this and chime in as I am not so savvy on that aspect myself.

thanks leigh, i think that s why they are going to do the emptying study first, i was just a bit confused, so much tests, conditions and medication are spoke about when we got to the pead its hard to keep up,

thanks for your help

I know this is older post but wanted to respond.....

I think it is great they want to do an GES before a Fundo. Most Gi's/Surgeons don't.And from my experience and talking to other Mom's this should be a No brainer for Dr's to do.

DGE can be made much, much worse if it is the cause of the reflux and a Fundo is done. Then you end up with uncontrollable retching.Because there was an underlying cause for the reflux,Does that make sense???

I hope everything turns out well for you guys!!!

The test showd that the stomach contents goes into the first part of the intestines as it should but it then slows down from there i was verry sceptical about the fundo as a lot of the girls on here know but we really have ran out of options

Let me first say I am not against a Fundo all three of my girls have had one and Grace has had two.I just know what problems we have had with Grace because she had an Underlying motility problem.

If things slow down in the intestines, then the reflux maybe made worse because of this.So therefore after the Fundo you may left with horrible retching as I said before, because the underlying problem(slow motility in the intestines has not been treated).Hopefully, this will not be the case with Miki and the Fundo will fix everything. But,it's just something I have seen happen many, many times and thought I would mention it.
