I just want to bring to everyone's attention the petition Dr. Lucy Miller's group (kid's foundation) www.kidfoundation.org (http://www.kidfoundation.org)) has started to have their research continue and be allowed to be assessed for inclusion in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical manual used by health professionals to promote reliable research, diagnosis and treatment. Go to her website to obtain a individual pettion, professional one, or group petition.

Hope all are well.

Is this the same as Sensory Integration Disorder? I didn't have enough time to check out the link completely?

Nice to see you on again, Pam, I've missed you. I hope all is well.

yes...it appears that here it is referred to as Sensory processing disorder, but also I have heard people say sensory intergration disorder...I don't understand enough about it yet, although it would appear that two of my children have certain difficulties in this area (hence my interest)...Larissa appears to be hyposensitive and so does Katherine. The woman running the Alberta group is "extremely" motivated as her son has severe issues. I believe that this Dr. Miller is considered a guru of the field. But there are others as well. We have great difficulty getting the problem recognised in our education system, so these kids get labelled very quickly as ADHD and drugged. For SPD the treatment is not drugs but OT and PT. It is shown to be extremely effective in providing the appropriate stimuli to let these kids settle to work ....so we want snoozle rooms in our schools to accomodate their burn of needs. There is only one or two schools in the city where these rooms exist but whereever there is a site with special needs kids, we argue that they are necessary. Anyway this is going on far too long...point is we need to get the schools to recognize this condition as legitimate with research and support from the medical community the DSM is our key to that acceptance.

Pam, I so agree. I read that book about Sensory Integration and it really opened my eyes. I think we all have some issues with it. I could really relate when I read that book. You know the one I mean "The Out of Sync Child" by Carol Kranowitz.

Even the simplest think like the bathroom fan on drives me over the edge. My boyfriend can't stand the vacuum and he always tears all the labels out of shirts.

A girl I work with her son had great difficulty iin school and I myself felt he had a lot of these SID issues.

Thanks for posting on this.
