My son Evan who is now 16 months old had the emptying scan done when he was 8 months old, and he only emptied at 13%. His growth and development doc put him on Zantac and Reglan and that worked for a couple of months, but he started spitting up again so he switched him to Zantac and Prevacid. That worked up until a few weeks ago when Evan started having projectile vomiting, so the doc increased the Zantac. He told me if that didn't work then he would refer us to a GI, which I think he really needs anyway!! Well everything was going well until Sunday, when he started spitting up again, and then today he had projectile vomiting again. He threw up what little bit of french fries he had eaten 5 hours earlier. I even had to remove some french fry from his nose (sorry if TMI).So I guess tomorrow I am going to call his doc for the referrel to the GI. What should I expect when we go to the GI? Should he have another empting scan done to see if there is any improvement?

I am so sorry, I did not see this!
I am not sure if they will repeat the scan, but it would seem likely to me that it would be a good idea. How long was he on Reglan and it worked well, I guess? The prevacid and zantac do NOT address DGE, though. My ped has tried to convince me that prevacid will help in the long run, but I do not see where it has. A motility drug is required really. Here is a list of meds commonly used for treating DGE including the Reglan:

Does he vomit up everything or only heavy foods like french fries? Is there any possibility that he is not chewing them well enough and they are coming up as a result? I am just wonering if it is all foods, or just certain foods. 13% emptied is a severe case, my guy was 24% at one hour and they continued it to the 2.5 hour mark where he was at 45% finally, but still well below normal
Definately agree you need a GI. I hope that they send you to one, if not raise the roof!;-) Keep us posted.

I don’t have any experience with DGE. I just wanted to wish you luck with your doc. I hope you get the referral. I think if he is still having so many problems then he should really see a specialist. I hope they are able to do something to help him. Keep us posted.

I know with my oldest they repeated the scan when we started having problems again, we were at 8%. We tried all the drugs and nothing really made that big of a difference. Have they uped his Reglan? That would be the only one that would help the DGE the others just reduce acid. They might try erythromiacin. We tried but are allergic unfortunatly. We have actually been thinking of going out of the states to buy the "c" motility drug that is not approved in the states. That had very good results but some bad side effects. I am willing to watch for side effects as long as we can eat again. I am sorry you are having problems. Good luck with everything.

I concur. Seeing a GI is usually the best way to go because the have more experience and specialize w/ tummy troubles. Wishing you lots of luck.

Evan was on the Reglan for almost 3 months, and he didn't have any vomiting he just spit up from time to time. After about 3 months his reflux got worse though, so he was swithched to the Zantac and Prevacid.
Evan usually eats 12oz of stage 1 or 2 foods and drinks around 30 oz of Lactaid a day. He will vomit some of that at least once a day and spit up several times a day. He seems to only projectile vomit if he eats anything like fries or crackers. I have definitely noticed an increase in his spitting up since he has started eating more solid foods.
