View Full Version : Transposition-GERD

My son was born at 41 weeks with Transposition of the Great Arteries and had the switch operation 1 week later. He of course had the breathing tube for 2-3 days. When inserting the tube, they definitely had to fight to get it positioned correctly.

He has been a very fussy baby. I always thought it was from the surgery until I read about GERD. Ashton has every "common" syptom that is listed (and has these symptoms many times throughout the day). His pediatrician confirmed that he has GERD just from me explaining the problem and my research.

My question is: Could his GERD have anything to do with the breathing tube? Could they have harmed a valve or something??? And if so, can it be corrected and will he perhaps have problems long term? I hope he can outgrow this.

Thank you for helping us!

Hi,

If you look at all the kids who have congenital heart disease of almost any type, more of them will have GERD than a similar group without this problem. The intubation didn't cause this problem. No valves were injured. He should have this as a problem as long as anyone else.

Good luck, Dr. Olson
