Does anyone know if asthma like symptoms can cause a lingering cough? Linda-Marie seems to be doing kinda ok one day and the next is coughing more. I've been keeping her on the nebulizer, 2 diff meds, one is a steroid the other is albuterol (prob. mis-spelled that) Anyway, I spoke with her doc today and he suggested trying an antibiotic in case it is a sinus infection...now if it was an infection, wouldn't there be a thick discharge coming from her nose or something? She had some issues with snot earlier on but lately, she has been fine in that area. She has no facial swelling. She sometimes does sound wheezy and the cough will be a bit worse at night. I have her mattress propped up and I use a vaporizer in her room. She just cut her second tooth so is still drooling like a little puppy. Could her cough be a sinus infection or could it be something else? I just hate to give her meds if they are not necessary. At an earlier app. with her doc, he looked up her nose and there was no sign of swelling. Just read so much about antibiotic use and how it can lead to thrush and all. I mean, I'll use it to see if it helps...just wondering if any of your little ones went thru this...
thanks.

I have asthma and reflux and I have had more sinus infections than I can count. When I get one I usually get a headache around my eyes and even my upper jaw, like just above my upper teeth hurt, then I know I am in trouble. There has never been any discharge at all and I think that is why there is infection simply b/c there is no drainage. KWIM?
I have never had a cough with a sinus infection. I have a cough when I have asthma though. "IF" it is a sinus infection you will need antibotics. If not then I would not give antibotics, I would wait awhile to to see if they are really needed.
At the earlier appt, how earlier? I should think he would have know if she had the infection or not. I would be sure to actually 'see' the dr before giving antibotics?
Best wishes

Well, I only know this from Rach, as my kids have had a cough all summer long and now we think that Jack has asthma, so I do know that it is a sign.
My doc told me that with the nebulizer, if it isn't asthma, then his cough will go away and won't come back, but if it's asthma, it will.
**sigh** what fun, huh?!

All 3 of my children have asthma and they cough with it rather than wheeze. If the cough eases off after treatment with the nebulizer it sounds like asthma. My children improve on the nebuliser but one of mine also needs a preventer medication each day and night. I don't know at what age this can start as she was 3 before she was properly diagnosed.

Thanks so much for the replies. Her earlier app. where he looked up her nose was a few weeks ago, she had the same cough then. He said to bring her the end of this week to check on her again so maybe I'll hold off on the antibiotic unti I know for sure its some type of infection.

Sinus issues can cause coughing (and throat clearing) because of the sometimes present post-nasal drip. It's irritating to the throat. Good luck figuring out what it is!

Thanks...keep going back and forth with trying to decide weather to just give it to her...she sounded so stuffy this morning and I used the nose sucker...and got a big wad of yellow snot out of her nose (sorry!!) so I'm thinking it could indeed be a sinus infection...poor stinker.
