Okay, so I thought that the meds only controlled pain and had no effect on spitting up???

Brief update:....Mason was doing very well on one 15mg solutab. He was a silent refluxer until he started solids and then began spitting up about every 10-15 minutes. Not huge amounts, it was just non stop. At about the 5 month peak point, he started refusing feeds and screaming. So the GI added another 1/2 tab as well as pepcid at night.

Fast forward to 8 months (current) and for the last month he has been doing so well I am thinking he is outgrowing it. The prevacid has kept him pain free since about 3 months. But I notice that now he only spits up 1-2 times a day. liek any nomral baby would. Though I DO hear him silent refluxing often. Either way, it is nothing like it was.

So knowing the GI may want to start weaning him at his next appointment in a few weeks and seeing that he is doing so well and obviously past his peak. I decided last week to take away that 1/2 tab and see how he does......Here is where I am confused.

It has now been 1 week. He has zero pain and is quite a happy baby. But he is most definately spitting up a lot more again. I find this odd as I thought Prevacid had no effect on motility and spitting up. Why would he start doing this? I don't think it is coincidental asit is a very noticable difference. BUT, he still has no pain at all.

I hate to phone the GI and bug her when he doesnt hurt and we see her again in a few weeks. Should I just let him spit up since he doesnt hurt. Does anyone understand why this is happenening? Maybe I should post a thread in the pharmecy section as this is just wierd.

Bonnie, strictly speaking, the action of prevacid is to decrease the number of active acid pumps in the stomach. This in turn should decrease the acid content of the stomach. When this happens, lots of other good things can happen. Obviously the first is less pain on vomitting because there is less direct action of the extra acid on the lining of the mucosa from the stomach to the mouth. However, lowering the acid content also leads to less vomitting. We can speculate why this is but in the end, that is what commonly happens when a sour stomach gets a break from excess acid. There may still be some pain involved but without having a baby speak to us we can only guess on their crying or fussiness or not sleeping. It sounds like Mason might be a candidate for a motillity agent like domeperidone.
Hope this helps, Graham Ph.C.

Interesting that you said that. I ended up speaking with the GI who said this was definately not the time for me to be weaning him. She thinks more likely 18-24 months as she has always suspected motility issues. I don't really know WHAT issues...but she feels he will outgrow it. At least I know now the meds were obviously working well so I will keep him on them and maybe one day he will be reflux free and able to poop, lol.

Thanks!
