Our daughter is 9 months old, was born 5 weeks early. Besides having silent reflux, she is a very healthy baby. However, with her being in daycare, she is exposed to a lot more germs. 2 months ago, she got her first real cold (she started teething around the same time also) which she started to get over then got another one. We took her to her doc and he noted some wheezing and rapid breathing, he felt it was bronchiolitis (sorry if i mis-spelled that). She was given a treatment with a nebulizer in his office and after noticing a slight improvement in her breathing, we were sent home with one and started treatments. We kept her home the following week and she again started to get better. However, last Sunday, she became worse again, so much so that we took her to the Emergency Room because her breathing was so ragged. After giving her a few treatments, they decided to keep her overnight for observation. She was released the next day and again we were told to continue treatments and were given a steroid to help reduce any inflamation. After a follow up with her doc, he suggested keeping her on the steroid thru the cold and flu season just to be on the safe side. We were told she had Reactive Airway Disease which from what i understnad is basically saying a child may have asthma. It does run in the family, so is there the chance that this is something she was born with but did not show itself until she got these colds? She still has a cough and still has some wheezing. Her appetite has been great during all of this and shes doing everything she normally does. I just cannot understand why this cough will not go away. She is not allergic to anything and like I said, she was healthy up until this cold. Can you shed any light onto this condition, how long a child normally has these symptoms and could she possibly outgrow it? Thanks so much and sorry this is so long...
