View Full Version : How can you tell when Prilosec has gone bad?

My son Connor is on 2ml of compounded Prilosec at 2mg/ml twice a day. I get my script refilled every 2 weeks. When I first pick up the refill, the medicine is fairly thick and stays white. By the end of the first week it has become very watery and by the 9th or 10th day, the medicine separates so that the top layer is clear water and the bottom is white sedement. I keep it refrigerated and shake it well for each dose. So to my question--is this medicine "breaking down" and losing it's effectiveness or is it still OK?

Thanks!

Sara, in speaking with the children's hospital, there doesn't seem to be any change in the appearance of their prepared prevacid. The product you mentioned was prilosec. The hospital has a formula for losec and the never use it. The white color comes from the bicarb and I'm assuming it should stay the same in appearance with the prilosec.
Does the medication work just as well in the second 1/2 of the bottle as the first?

In my opinion, the medicine loses it's effectiveness as is gets more and more watery. I didn't know if that was just my perception/imagination or if the med was actually "breaking down" and losing its potency. It is so hard to tell with refluxers as Connor is turning 5 months old and starting to teethe--both of which seem to exacerbate reflux so I wasn't sure if it was the meds or other factors. Does that make sense?

Sara, I guess if the result is consistantly the same, then my guess is the drug may well be losing it's effectiveness. Try asking for smaller amounts for each fill to see if that helps.
