Hello,

We are new here. Kayla is 8 yrs old and has Autism, Tourette's, and OCD Traits. She was recently diagnosised by her Ped. to having acid reflux. However, we now believe she has had it from the age 2, but it was misdiagnosised as suspected seizures(choking and vomitting in sleep). So far, she hasn't been responding to the medications very well.

Kayla was on Prevacid for 1 1/2 month the first time, than was switched to Xantac for about 2 weeks which didn't work due to the her aversion to the taste of the liquid medication. She is now back on Prevacid. Last night she got sick shortly after taking it, and woke up this morning feeling sick again. We gave it to her again this morning but it did not help. She hasn't been eating well except in the afternoon. Which can also be variable. Today, she hasn't been eating well at all.

I just got the allergy testing back. Which is confusing... They did IGE and IGG Rast testing.

IGE Total...Conc IU/ml...25.00 Absorbance..0.166

Egg white....0.12 (I Mild reaction) Absorb.....0.030

Milk was negative in both IGE and IGG Testing

Wheat...11.55 (III-Moderate) in IGG Testing only. Absor..1.016

So now I am wondering if she is allergic to Wheat instead of milk which we were eliminating. She also has been tested for Celiac Disease through the blood test several times which have been normal. I have Celiac Disease. She has been on the GF diet in the past but we did not see much difference. Is there a test for Gluten Intolerenc vs Celiac Disease? So far, she has had IGA and IGG testing once, and the anti-tTG/anti-endomysial, which were both negative. The IGA was negative and the IGG was equiv., so they did the other testing. She is also allergic to grasses.

We went recently to Wisconsin to see a DAN Doctor at the Allergy Associates.

Rast IGE tested Dermatophagoides farine?, Egg White, Cow milk, wheat, corn (flour), peanut, Candida Albicans, and Altemaria tenius. IGG tested for Cow milk, wheat, candida albicans.

Kayla also has a history of having dental problems we thought was related to the medications, but now we wonder. She also has trace/low amounts of Ketones in her urine (unexplained)

She will see a GI Doctor that visits in November.

Thanks

Diana

I am so interested in allergy testing b/c I have always been so bothered by everything and yet they say I am not allergic to anything? LOL

Did you ever hear of Dr Doris Rapp, I just love her see wrote some great books, like "Is this your Child" (that was years ago)

Kayla having the dental problems maybe reflux related. I believe it is anyway. Someone I work with their child had to have caps put on at age 3-5? and was told it was lack of calcium? So I don't know

The things you write in your post are so over my head, but I know other ladies here have had problems with trying to find what their child can eat. I am sure they will chime in soon.

Best wishes and hugs  I hope it gets easier and you get some answers

Oh sheesh, you've been through it.
I agree, that book that Jean mentioned is AWESOME. I read it and couldn't put it down.

I will see if I can find some others who are very well versed in allergies. I know one in particular. I will pm her and have her take a looksie.

Welcome, btw!

I'm sure there will be some to give you advice and answers, and if not themselves they will send you in the right direction....Do you think she may have had reflux since birth? I have a grown dd that I now belive had reflux all along but was not dianosed ....So a big welcome to you and Kayla

I'll be honest with you--I know nothing of what the actual numbers mean with the allergy testing. All I know is that we were told that my dd has a "mild" allergy to soy and nobody shared the serum numbers with me.

Did your allergist explain the reports to you? If not, I think I'd call and make an appointment to go over them in detail with him/her. It is so frustrating to have all this information and not be able to decipher it. :hairpull:

Please keep us updated! In the meantime, I'll try to find some info on allergy testing for you. :-)

Here comes the medical technologist, right on cue.

I work with these lab reports every day, so I can tell you what you're looking at.

IGE Total...Conc IU/ml...25.00 Absorbance..0.166

Egg white....0.12 (I Mild reaction) Absorb.....0.030

Milk was negative in both IGE and IGG Testing

Wheat...11.55 (III-Moderate) in IGG Testing only. Absor..1.016

The "Conc IU/ml" stands for concentration of international units per milliliter. Basically, doctors made up a unit to measure the amount of allergy antibodies in a milliliter of blood. It's actually based on the absorbance measurement, so that part is redundant. All you need to know is that the higher the number, the more severe the allergy. Same goes for the roman numerals... that is the severity class of the allergy. Class III is actually not too terrible... Class VI is the worst.

Is there a test for Gluten Intolerenc vs Celiac Disease?

I don't think I've heard of a test for gluten intolerance. I guess the only way to tell the difference would be to give her gluten and non-gluten foods and see if there is a difference in reaction. Kinda sucks, I know, but that's the best there is right now I think.

Rast IGE tested Dermatophagoides farine?, Egg White, Cow milk, wheat, corn (flour), peanut, Candida Albicans, and Altemaria tenius. IGG tested for Cow milk, wheat, candida albicans.

Those are just more allergy tests. The ones you don't recognize (dermatophagoides, candida, etc.) are probably weeds, trees, grasses, and stuff like that. Doctors use the species names because they feel the need to be all sciencey all the time.

She also has trace/low amounts of Ketones in her urine (unexplained)

Well, let's explain that, shall we? The ketones are in Kayla's urine because she's not eating well. Ketones show up in the urine when people start burning fat for energy. People who are starving have ketones in their urine. Michele has ketones because she is losing weight so fast.

That's about all I can help you with. If you (or anyone) has any other lab questions, don't hesitate to ask. I love explaining these things to people.

Jon

P.S. Yes, the allergy article is on its way. It's actually finished; Michele just won't type it up because she's stubborn. She says she doesn't want to decipher my horrific handwriting. So everyone can blame her for the delay. He he he....

Hi,

I wanted to thank all of you for the great post. The information regarding the allergy testing was very helpful. We actually went to another allergist locally to check to see if Kayla had Asthma, since she has developed a chronic cough. He redid some of the testing and tried some new ones. He did both the IGG and IGE and they all came back normal. Is there a reason that the IGG for wheat would be at a level III and normal on the other test? These were done about 2 months apart.

Since we had her on a wheat free diet we have noticed an improvement in the GERDS. However, she still does have it but not as frequent. She has started a regular diet at school again, but we have taken out the wheat at home. Her brother came back as having allergies for dairy...Level I (IGE), Corn Level II (IGE), Wheat -Level III (IGE), Eggs Level I (IGE), and peanuts Level III (IGE). Milk level III - (IGG). He also had a postitive skin test to soy and negative IGE test two years ago, which we are going to have checked.

Our school wants to have the tests redone to make sure they are accurate. Especially since there are so many food allergies. He came back at Level V for grass and Level III for Ragweed. He is very allergic. His total IGE was in the 200+ range and he is 12 yrs old. He is also on the Autism Specrum. We have been careful with his diet. We have also noticed a facial rash and hot ears when he accidently got a hamburger at school one day and popcorn another day.

Bye for now.

Diana

P.S. There is a correction in the Allergy forum.... there actually is a test for gluten allergy. See the allergy forum for more info.
