Hi Ladies,

Just wanted to update you on Teagan's Prevacid regimen and ask a question...

We were on 7.5, 2 x day for 2 weeks with no change, he was hardly eating and was sreaming during the few ounces he would scream: ( We went to see the specialist at the 2 week mark and she doubled his dose. 30 seemed too much so we did 7.5, 3 x day. About 18 days into Prevacid he is doing better :jaw-dropping: , he is eating his entire bottle with little fuss!!! What a relief, what a change, again I am allowing
myself to hope. My mom fed him yesterday and he took his whole bottle in 8 minutes (it usually takes an hour for just a few ozs), she cried when they were finished.

The downside is it seems the Prevacid makes him very agitated. Has anyone else experienced this? My usually great sleeper is up a lot now and just seems super agitated, only when trying to sleep or sleeping. We are giving him lots of Mylicon for possible gas but other than that we have decided to cut back down to 7.5, 2 x day and we will see how that goes.

What do you ladies think of the agitation? Will he get used to the medicine? Does it mean it is too much for him?

He is 4.5 months and 15.3 lbs.

Any thoughts? Thanks as always for your support!

I don't know but I would love to hear more responses to this. Mason has always been super quick to get ticked off. I always just assumed it was his personality, but he's been on Prevacid so long how would I know? I never even thought that the medication could do it?

I really don't know, but cutting the med back seems like a good start. Sometimes I think it is just a bit too much for them, hopefully the good progress will continue.

I've doing some research on prevacid side effects and mostly it constipates and bloats right after taking it. However there is a site where grown ups share their opnions on the drug and so I thought it would be worth reading, since we'll never know what our babeis are experiencing, so here it is...http://www.askapatient.com/viewratings.asp?drug=20406&name=PREVACID&sort=age

I don't think there are generally any neurological side effects to prevacid (at least that I've heard of). However, I think it can upset their stomach or cause gas, so maybe that's what's agitating him? Also, his system might be getting used to digesting that much food. It's a big change from taking only an oz or two to all of that at one time. I know once we got Titus on RTF formula and he was sucking it down, he was a little off-kilter for a week or so. If things start to go bad when you're back on the twice daily, you might try twice daily 7.5 and 15 doses instead of the three times daily regimen. It might match the suggested dosing better. If you're doing the doses too closely, that might be a problem. I'm just guessing here though. I guess what I'm saying is that you shouldn't shy away from increasing the dose if things start to go bad again. The effect could have been him just getting accustomed to the medication, from digestion, from a variety of things. good luck!

Jonathan has been on Prevacid for awhile now and it has certainly helped more than the other meds we have tried. However, since last spring, he has been on the reflux roller coaster again so we asked about his doctor about the dosage. Our gastroenterologist did not want to increase his dose from 7.5 2X a day and Jonathan weighs about 21 pounds at 26 months old. We checked with his pediatrician and she wanted to go by what the gastroenterologist said. So maybe your dose is a little high? Or maybe our gastroenterologist is just very conservative. I wish there was a magic formula for creating the correct dose that all the doctors could agree on.... Good luck with Teagan!
