View Full Version : prevacid stopped working or just reflux peak?

I have a challenging question. I wrote and asked before about adding zantac to our prevacid regiment. Our GI agreed and we've been on both for a little over a week. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! Titus is back down to 1-2 wakings per night and actually eating during the day (we also changed to ready-to-use formula which has helped).

While I know lots of folks use both medications in tandem with great success, I'm curious why it's making such an enormous difference. I was wondering whether prevacid might have quit working for Titus. He's a bit over 16pounds and on a 15mg solutab per day (1/2 am, 1/2 pm), which the GI assures me is a hefty dose. Is there a way to tell whether the prevacid isn't effective for him anymore or if the zantac is helping because his reflux is just peaking right now (he's almost 5 months). Is it just by trial and error? I hate to change the PPI without a good reason. Things were so awful before prevacid that going off of it is terrifying. If you have any insight or suggestions, I would really appreciate it!

Anna, there are so many variables in your situation, I think if I had the 100% correct answer to this I could retire and make a living picking lotto numbers as a full time job. But seriously, the changing of the formula may have done something but I think that the main thing you did was to add the zantac at night. A flare-up may have occured but I think that maybe the medication may have something more to do with it. If everything is going well this is not the time to make any changes right now though. Keep the PPI the way it is, just remember it works better about an hour before the meal for each dose.
Thanks Graham Ph.C.
