My son Jordan was diagnosed with silent reflux at 7 weeks, takes zantac 1.5ml 2 x's a day-He eats well in the 90th percent for weight and is now after starting zantac sleeping pretty well, the only issue with reflux is congestion and chocking coughing, and gagging. I was just wondering if it is safe for them to CIO at nite, he has slept through the nite 7 times and just recently wants to be held most of the nite, he stops crying right when picked up, im just scared that he may be crying due to reflux but that doesn't appear to be the problem should i continue to pick him up or should i try letting him cry it out?

Hi,

Ah ha! CIO= cry it out! If he stops crying immediately with picking up and has slept the night on numerous occasions, then I would try the CIO strategy. If you continue to pick him up, this will simply continue and be tougher to stop. Sleep strategies to help should be reviewed with your pediatrician to make sure your basic notions on this subject are sound.

Good luck, dr. Olson
