Can they detect asthma at any age or is it usually diagnosed at a later age? reason i ask is Jordan has been getting really wheezy after crying, and it will take him a like 5 minutes to catch his breath after hes done crying sounds like he just ran a marathon, I also have asthma and don't know if it runs in familys or not, i also think it may be some kind of seasonal allergys i have allergys and when im sneezing so is jordan

Emma was diagnosed at about 5 months. Usually the docs can pick it up.

With Emma they are very meticulous .... we don't know any of her bio family history so they take good care of her (and we just spoil her and her brother!).

My daughter was diagnosed at age 2 1/2 years. My nephew was diagnosed at 2 months. So I think thay can diagnose asthma at any age. I do know that it can run in families. Asthma comes from her biological(my ex) fathers side.

I used to hear that doctor's wont diagnose until after age 2...but now it seems that they are diagnosing at young ages. I think we got ours around 6 months and no other doctor has even questioned it.

The rule of thumb is after age 2. The reasoning behind this is that there is so little distance between the lungs and the nose in an infant/young toddler that what sounds like wheezing is usually throat/upper airway sounds. It is VERY difficult to detect true wheezing in an infant without a stethoscope.

In Australia it is generally diagnosed and treated no sooner than 18months. It is hard to find a Dr who will diagnose it before that. BUT in saying that with a strong family history I would ask your Dr, they may start treating based on that.

I was going to add that my son was diagnosed early due to a lot of coughing especially at night, a pH probe determined that these didn't correlate with reflux so they assumed it was asthma. I have a respiratory pediatrician and they are very good in dealing with young children and asthma.

I have to say that my daughter was diagnosed with reactive airway (asthma only when you are ill) when she was 7 mons. old. Both my son and I have asthma when we get a cold or anything.....it usually will go straight to the upper respiratory. She has been on albuterol and liquid steriods. Currently she is on Flovent 2x daily and Zyrtec (because both my husband and I have allergies).

So if you have immediate family with these issues mosyt likely your child will too (a 50% chance). Also, my daughter was in and out of the ER for months with respiratory problems....I think this also made them consider this diagnosis.
