Dr. Olson -

My 11-week old grandson is scheduled is have "patent urachus surgery" this coming Wednesday at Children's Medical Center. They also intend to repair an umbillical hernia at the same time, if possible. My question is this: After Braydon has this surgery on Wednesday, is it possible at all that his severe acid reflux will improve? He was diagnosed with the refllux at 2-3 weeks of age and is currently on 5 ml Prilosec 2 x a day and 4 ml Carafate 4 x a day. He currently weighs 16.6 pounds (he's a big boy - 25 inches long). We were originally thickening his formula, which was changed several times and he has been on Elecare for about 1 month now. We have not been told to thicken the Elecare. We are so helping this surgery might give him some relief from all the constant spit-ups. What is your best guess? Thank you very much for your help.

Hi,

I know of no relationship with the patent urachus repair and improvement of GERD.

If he is not doing well on the very expensive elemental formula Elecare, why continue it? To me having him constantly spit up a cheaper formula would be preferable. Discuss with your doctor other less expensive alternatives.

Good luck with the surgery, Dr. Olson
