Hi
My son (13 weeks tomorrow) has until last week been on Zantac 1ml 3x per day and was quite settled but starting to show sypmtons again so our cons gave us a two week supply of losec mups to trial. He is approx 15lb

We are now on the third day and if anything he is 10 times worse. He is on 5mg once a day and I'm having to cut 10mg tablets in half then disolve in water and administer - I find the tablet does not completely disolve and were left with a load of granuals at the bottom which I'm trying to get into my son but its proving very difficult. He is getting very windy and spent the whole of last night writhing around sticking his fingers down his throat. Can you offer any advice on how to administer and what the average time to see improvement is if there is one. At the moment I see no reason for changing from the Zantac as he was much happier on that.

Any help much appreciated.

Maria, the MUPS are very unstable if you are cutting it and saving it for the next dose. You should throw away the second 1/2 instead of using it. Your son's dose of omeprazole is good but the ranitidine could be increased a little. Talk to your pediatrician before doing this. The rantitidine is sometimes a good one to give at night while you continue to give the omeprazole at breakfast time. There are a few explanations of this on this board if you look back. Omeprazole is usually well tolerated side effect wise so any discomfort your son is experiencing is probably due to insufficient therapeutic response.
Hope this helps.

Many thanks for your reply - we've actually been given the omeprazole to use instead of the ranitidine with no advice given on changing from one to the other.
I shall try and contanct my cons tomorrow for advice as the poor lad (and mommy too) is getting no sleep whatsoever.
