On the advice of these boards, I asked my pedi to put my son on prevacid. He was on .5ml of Zantac 3 times a day He is now on 2.5ml of a 3.3mg/ml suspension of Prevacid once a day. Not only do these boards suggest that this is a small dose but he doesn't seem to be doing as well as I'd hoped. I asked my doctor about the quantity and she said it is the correct dosage for this concentration. I am on the verge of switching him back to the Zantac. It wasn't perfect but at least he didn't spend all night grunting as he did last night.

He is 8 weeks, weighs 14lbs. He has been on Prevacid for 2 days. He doesn't have any negative effects from the AR except except for excessive spitting up and obvious refluxing and pain. How much Prevacid should he be on? Is this the correct dosage? Should I just wait this out a few more days?

Hi,

The usual lansoprazole dose is a 15 mg dose for those under 30 kg. Your son is about 6 kg and is getting about 7.5 mg, a small dose. We even give to some kids a 30 mg dose, above the standard dosing guidelines, but still safe and effective.

Give it a week and if no better, a dosing change could be done. Work with your doctor.

Good luck, Dr. Olson
