Nick had his UGI on Wednesday. According to the radiologist, everything looked ok and he didn't see any reflux. Ummm....he looked for MAYBE 30-45 seconds! The pedi has not called yet, I plan to call today to see what they want to do. My hunch is that they will try to say that this proves that he is fine. We are still having issues with some choking/gagging, but not as much. However last night he gagged and vomited twice after eating and then only ate 21 ounces for the day. I am having a harder and harder time getting him to take his Prevacid. He gags on the solids and then crys and trys to bat the food away. I don't know what to do anymore....should I push for the GI appointment?? Thanks for any feedback.:sad5:

Jessica, I would push for the GI appt! There are problems and if the reflux didn't show that doesn't mean he's fine. That means he wasn't refluxing at the time or they didn't catch what was the problem. Where did you get the test done? Izzy's was done at Chippenham and they were amazing. The feeding team at the Richmond Children's hospital are awesome and I believe they would help his problems immensely. They have so many tips and tricks to help the baby that I would have never got from her doc. Also once he is seen you can always call them for specific awnsers...ones that his regular doc couldn't help with!
Good luck getting an appt! I don't know what I would have done without them this past year...Keep us posted!

Upper GI's are not actually very accurate in determining reflux or severity. They are a point in time test and they will only determine reflux if they are refluxing during the test.
I would ask for a GI if you feel your ped is not meeting your needs in the reflux department, Good luck.

I second what Rach said, upper GI's are not accurate. My GI just told me this as well. Push for that referal, that doesn't mean that your little one doesn't have reflux. ;)

Allie had an upper GI, which was normal too. Then, she had a ph probe which showed 248 episodes of reflux in a 24 hour period. That is a lot! Her GI said he can tell she has reflux just by certain things she does. The UGI also did not show that she had delayed gastric emptying (DGE). We had an emptying scan done, and she only emptied 13% after 75 minutes (normal is 50-75% after 60 minutes).
So, the UGI is good for making sure that there are no physical obstructions (like pyloric stenosis, etc.) but not for diagnosing reflux or DGE.
Push for a GI appointment, ASAP!
Also, plesae try not to stress about the 21 oz. Many days, Allie ate only 16-18 oz. However, she has always maintained her growth curve. Just try to look at weight gain and not intake (unless intake is severely low - like 5-6 oz per day).
Hang in there!

Thanks everyone!! I called the pedi, and they had not gotten the results of the UGI yet. I am going to push for the peds GI appointment. I finally got them to write Nick a prescription for the Prevacid solutabs instead of the powder. Life today was easier. I'm not going to push him to eat solids....I don't need to make him leary of that! I truly am trying not to stress about how much he eats...but he only ate 18 ounces today...and it just seems low. Oh well, he looks good, and has been happier for the last week and a half than he has ever been. I guess that's saying something!!
