My grandson makes an awful squeeking sound when he wakes up from a nap. It comes from his throat, it is very high pitched like a dogs toy....he also does it when he cries and sometimes just out of the blue. He recently started to make that gulping sound infants make when they nurse, when he is drinking his bottle. No it is not a sound he makes because he likes the sound...if he is real upset, it will take his breath away like choking.
He has seen his DR and he said it may be reflux acid coming up and aggrivating his larnyx. His GI/NP says that he is on so much Previcid 30mg per day, he weighs 22lbs and is 11 months old, that there is no way he has enough acid in his tummy to cause him any pain or discomfort. That is not true as he wakes in the night from refluxing and pieriodically throughout the day. She suggests he may have a" loose wind pipe"
Is that a real problem? What would you suggest to do about this,as it is not normal and not being taken seriously?
Thank you

Hi,

This is called tracheolarngealmalacia ("loose wind pipe") and is common and gets better with time as the airway cartilage gets firmer. It is probably not related to any reflux. It is generally not a medical issue, just something that scares parents and grandparents.

Good luck, Dr. olson
