Hi Dr Olson,

My son has been on Zantac since he was 2 months old(he is now 7 months old), he never would spit up at all and he always has been in the 95th percentile with his weight, he was considered a silent reluxer, over the last few months he has been spitting up a tremendous amount, he is currently on Alimentum.
When he started solids is when I noticed him spitting up so my doctor told me to stop for a while but he still continues to spit up, last month during his 6 month checkup I was told to take the cereal out of his bottles(he takes about an ounce and a half of rice cereal per ounce) and strart to feed him cereal and fruits and veggies, I tried but he spit up even more, I even tried to slowly decrease the cereal but he spit up alot.
So anyway I put the cereal back in and I feed him some fruits and veggies also, I am not sure what to do at this point, the doctor wants to start weaning him off Zantac which I do agree with, I feel he doesnt need that anymore, I just feel bad that he is spitting up so much, he loves to eat, he weighs 23 pounds!
I would appreciate any advice you could give me! Is it O.K. to eat solids along with all that cereal in his bottles??
Thanks,
Angela

Hi, Angela,

I'm not sure what symptoms he had to generate the diagnosis of "silent refluxer". Obviously he is healthy and doing well in general. Solids can be given with the cereal in the bottle. I think he probably fits the category now of what we would call the "happy spitter". I may be missing something here regarding the silent refluxing, but I would just use the standard reflux precautions that are listed on this site and consider that he has probably GER rather than GERD.

If there are other details of this I should be aware of, just send another message.

Good luck, Dr. Olson
